In addition to the hydrogen leak on Discovery, NASA is now dealing with a crack in the foam insulation on the shuttle’s external tank.

  • Having flown to orbit after a much delayed liftoff, the crew of Discovery perform the on-orbit checkout only to find that falling foam insulation has damaged too many tiles for reentry. Having safely transferred the crew, NASA is faced with a stark choice: leave the Space Shuttle Discovery docked to the International Space Station requiring significantly more propellant to reboost or allow it to reenter uncrewed to face a fiery death.. most likely over outback Australia.
