Good grief.
The dang things just have cell phones inside them. They emit nothing more than a regular cell phone does. Do they want to ban all cell phones also?
My biggest fear about something like this would be hackers. Maybe they will eventually be able to copy the commands coming from the utility company and then get the “number” of every house.
They could then just send a command to each house and order the service turned off. Then order the meter to never answer the next call coming in. Thus their service will not be able to be turned back on until the meter is physically fixed.
Do this to a whole city and it could take weeks to get everyone’s power back on.
I dislike the government putting their nose into everything. These systems are designed to monitor and report everything with goal of changing behaviors. Want to get a call from your local utility asking why you flushed the toilet twice in 15 minutes or why the lights were on in two rooms on opposite ends of the house?
How will people respond when they start implementing other features of the smart grid that give control over house to the government and utilities like the ability to throttle power consumption and turn off and on appliances?
So now your going to protest internet connected appliances?Or do what normal people do and not buy one?
The meters do not have the ability to tell what you do inside your home. They can only tell how much power your using at any given time. Which is the right of the utility to know.
They already know how much you use each month. The new meter just cuts the time frame down from 12 periods in a year to 365 increments.
Plus you could always go solar/wind and just live off the grid. You still have a choice.
I’m sure your happy with your cell phone and they know WAY more than you think, about everything you do and everywhere you go all day long.
