Actually, both Dragon and Cygnus brought spacesuit parts and the appropriate tool kits up to ISS so that the astronauts could investigate and fix the problem. This is what made the spacewalks in December to fix the failed coolant pump possible. Moreover, the faulty part will be brought back to Earth in the next Dragon cargo ship for further investigation.

The shuttle obviously had greater capabilities, but in the long run these private ships will do much much more.
