This began with Energia’s kerolox strap-on booster. That was a Ukrainian design….with an upper stage—it launched a spy sat fashioned after a Vostok hull….which is still made. That LV was known for that sat….Zenit.

The engine was the four-nozzle RD-170…an F-1 class engine. The all Russian Sunkar/Soyuz 5 is the new Zenit but fatter.

Cut in in half….you get the Atlas 5 RD-180…half strength. Even weaker is the RD-191.

That’s what Angara uses.

Instead of HLLVs, they figured use the EELV Rube Goldberg assembly model of launching a lot of weaker rockets like this.

Seeing that even Musk loves HLLVs, does the EELV approach look good to you now?

If so…Angara is your rocket. Enjoy.
