"Blind Man's Bluff" is a good book which tells of some amazing underwater secret operations and incidents of the Cold War, including recovering lost H-bombs and the tale of the Glomar Explorer. It's sobering to think of the even more classified info we still haven't heard.

Steve Earle asked: "And did any of the subs lost by us and the Russians have any nukes aboard?"

Yup. Read up on the Gomar Explorer. It is a fascinating story, badly told here:

It's recommended one reads: Tom Clancy's "The Sum of All Fears".
Unknown if Clancy has some kind of view into the future but some items he has included in his novels, later (with some modification) ended up occurring.

If this is not a wake-up call, read: "Debt of Honor (1994)", as I am convinced Osama bin Laden may have done just that, which possibly put this idea into his playbook.

Lucky thing that it wasn't a terrorist group or a rouge government finding it! Are there more lost nukes around for them to look for? I fear there are some here and there in the former Soviet union. I suppose that the heavy metals would be preserved and that what's left of the complicated detonation mechanism could be very helpful for an aspiring nuclear terror government trying to reconstruct it. It is pretty scandalous that this thing has been available for anyone for so many decades (if this story is true at all).

If true, that would be a Mark 4 nuclear bomb. It was dropped from B-36B 44-92075 after multiple engine failures doomed the plane. According to my reading the bomb was not armed with nuclear material.

There is a great site that lists all of the notable accidents involving these wonderfully massive airplanes.
