I can’t get the site to open at my office, but Boeing did some seriously dumb business things with 787. A big one was subcontracting all its parts to various suppliers all over the world. This meant they not only had to teach all of them how to build things up to their production standards (effectively teaching the world to compete with Boeing in the future) but coordinating a world wide set of subcontractors and sub section assembly areas is a nightmare and they are not good at this.

My favorite screw up was when they chose a vendor to supply connectors to bolt together sections of the composite hull - but forgot to ask how many they could make. They couldn’t make enough to build more then a plane of two a year.

Opps.
