I was 6 in '77.... Got my first tv in my bedroom in about 80... Black and white with glowing valves at the back an occasionally a smack on the side to stop the screen rolling... As many channels as you like as long as it was no more than 3.

I am literally looking at the pyramids in Egypt while drinking wine... Those pointy things are WAY bigger than you can imagine from photos and were built over 4000 years ago, ( with an accuracy that is mind blowing when seen in person) and show no signs of going anywhere soon, the voyager probes are hitting half a century and still operational, yet the cell phone I am typing this on will be obsolete in 2 years...

Sometimes things naturally go obsolete, but one thing is for sure... They don't make 'em like they used to!

" . . . and carried with it the risk of an explosion that would destroy Voyager-1."

Eh, we've gotten our money's worth. Engineers may be more willing to try riskier actions, knowing the spacecraft will die in a couple years anyway
