When this story appeared in early September I commented about it on Batchelor. This is not the prime method used to track objects in orbit (which remains in operation). Moreover, it is going to be replaced eventually by a more up-to-date system.

I notice that this NPR report conveniently leaves out the fact that this system is not the prime system used, thus giving the impression that its shutdown leaves us blind. It does not. But by leaving this minor detail out NPR does a great job of helping the government (which happens to be the military in this case) to lobby for more government funding.

I should add that this kind of reporting is very typical for NPR, and is one of the reasons I stopped listening to it. They biases and willingness to shill for the left just got too tiresome.
