But these folks take that level of nonsense to a level I never thought would fill a academic conference.

I’ve seen more intellectual depth and vigor in SF cons listening to hall arguments Trekies (who brag about their tolerance and love of diversity) nearly coming to blows arguing over Which Captain in the various series is the best.
