A toxic climate inevitably leads to violence and collateral damage. To avoid that, both sides have to tone it down.

Anyone who nevertheless prefers to pour oil into the fire simply has to accept some degree of responsibility, should things get out of control.

But since de-escalation (“turning the other cheek”) is a Christian virtue, it should actually appeal to outspoken Christian conservatives.
