I have to assume that any and all evidence, especially the DNA evidence has all been compromised and obfuscated to the point that there is no comprehensive way to ever determine with any degree confidence the true answer.

The story is constantly recycled every few years in order to have the same sensational Hollywood style conversation. Personally I am waiting for Mr. Peabody and Sherman to go back in time on the way back machine to find the truth of the matter.
