Land of cracks
Cool image time! The picture to the right, cropped to post here, was taken on June 28, 2024 by the high resolution camera on Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). Labeled a “terrain sample,” it was likely taken not as part of any specific research project but to fill a gap in the camera’s schedule in order to maintain its proper temperature. When the camera team needs to do this, they try to pick something interesting, but don’t always have that option.
In this case, the landscape available included the channel shown to the right. About a half mile wide and only about fifty feet deep, the floor of this canyon appears to have a lot of trapped dust, forming ripple dunes, along with a lot of knobby protrusions, likely small mesas. The canyon walls appear layered, with the erosion processes producing different features on opposite sides. On the southeast the layers appear to produce distinct terraces, while on the northwest the cliff is very steep at the top and then forms a long gently descending slope that appears formed of alluvial fill (from that cliff) and formed from erosion and landslides.
The white dot on the overview map to the right marks the location, on the southern edge of the Tharsis Bulge that produced four of Mars’ largest volcanoes. The inset shows that this particular channel is one of many parallel channels, and thus was likely formed not by surface flows but by underground pressure pushing up to spread the surface and crack it. That underground pressure also pushed up the Tharsis Bulge and formed the volcanoes.
Note how the parallel channels seem to end suddenly to the northeast, but then resume further on. A close analysis of that sixty mile long gap suggests these cracks are the oldest features here. In the gap it appears the top surface of the landscape was first stripped away, wiping out the parallel fissures. Several large buried craters here suggest the impacts might have done this. Then lava poured in, burying the craters and the surface, but at an elevation below that of the fissure floors.
Thus, the cracks — and the Tharsis Bulge — came first, followed by other events that reshaped that uplifted fracture landscape. That this location is 39 degrees south latitude suggests that some form of glacial activity was also part of that reshaping process, though no obvious glacial features are visible at present.
