This is generally known as a heckler’s veto. In this case it can be used to prevent certain science from being performed or to attack specific scientists or institutions. The heckler’s veto works, because — as Phill O noted — “People just want peace: and at any price!”

As Bill Newsome of Stanford University in California noted in the article, the Max Planck Society has a duty to stand up for its scientists, meaning that the heckler’s veto is just as unacceptable in science as it is for free speech.
