NATO to issue new space strategy to address growth in commercial sector
Capitalism in space? NATO officials at a meeting this week proposed issuing a new space strategy next year, designed to deal with the changing relationship in space between government and private enterprise.
During the Commercial Space Forum at NATO, participants discussed the threats they face, from cyber-attacks against ground systems, to jamming or spoofing of GPS and other satellite communications signals. They also addressed the importance of further investment in areas such as cybersecurity and sharing information about threats.
NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defence Investment, Ms Tarja Jaakkola, highlighted the need for a new relationship between the military and the commercial sector, “where both sides can learn from another, and where we can support and harness the entrepreneurial spirit and technological innovation essential to keep our defences strong and effective.”
More information here. It appears that NATO officials have realized that they can no longer do things as they have for the past half century, whereby they design, build, and own the space assets they launch. They must instead do what NASA and the Pentagon has been doing, become the customer that buys such products from the private enterprise.

Please consider supporting my work here at Behind the Black. Your support allows me the freedom and ability to analyze objectively the ongoing renaissance in space, as well as the cultural changes -- for good or ill -- that are happening across America. Fourteen years ago I wrote that SLS and Orion were a bad ideas, a waste of money, would be years behind schedule, and better replaced by commercial private enterprise. Only now does it appear that Washington might finally recognize this reality.
In 2020 when the world panicked over COVID I wrote that the panic was unnecessary, that the virus was apparently simply a variation of the flu, that masks were not simply pointless but if worn incorrectly were a health threat, that the lockdowns were a disaster and did nothing to stop the spread of COVID. Only in the past year have some of our so-called experts in the health field have begun to recognize these facts.

Re spoofing GPS.
Back in the Eighties when the US Naval Academy announced it was discontinuing teaching celestial navigati, ,I wrote to the Superintendent in protest, predicting that ways would be found to meacon the gps signal. The British invented the procedure as “Aspirin” to confuse the Headache of the German Knickebein and X Gerat electronic navigation aids.
“Meaconing is the interception and rebroadcast of navigation signals. These signals are rebroadcast on the received frequency, typically with power higher than the original signal, to confuse enemy navigation. Consequently, aircraft or ground stations are given inaccurate bearings.
Successful meaconing can cause aircraft to be lured into “hot” (ambush-ready) landing zones or enemy airspace, ships to be diverted from their intended routes, bombers to expend ordnance on false targets, or ground stations to receive inaccurate bearings or position locations.
The term ‘meacon’ is a portmanteau of masking beacon.”
The MIJI – Meaconing, Interference, Jamming, Intrusion – Report is NATO standard
Info on the Battle of the Beams https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Beams#Knickebein
Meaconing is likely why Iranian missiles missed the Mossad HQ were I to hazard a guess.
Now they need folks on the lookout for guys hitting the site with laser pointers during the next wave.
