Only 151 applicants responded to this first-ever open astronaut application process in Russia’s history. This contrasts badly with NASA’s recent application call, which received the second highest response ever, 6372 applicants.
On Christmas Eve 1968 three Americans became the first humans to visit another world. What they did to celebrate was unexpected and profound, and will be remembered throughout all human history. Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8, Robert Zimmerman's classic history of humanity's first journey to another world, tells that story, and it is now available as both an ebook and an audiobook, both with a foreword by Valerie Anders and a new introduction by Robert Zimmerman.

"Not simply about one mission, [Genesis] is also the history of America's quest for the moon... Zimmerman has done a masterful job of tying disparate events together into a solid account of one of America's greatest human triumphs."--San Antonio Express-News

Given the manned space flight capabilities of the two countries, I’d call that the definition of irony.
people are Not desperate to flee Russia
Yeah, I guess that IS ironic ! ! On the other hand, with all the recent problems with Soyuz, maybe a fair % of the Russian people are a little nervous about possibly putting their lives on the line ! ! Of course, that hasn’t stopped U.S. (& other nations’) astronauts from buying rides, but maybe the Russians are even more distrustful of their own Gov’t than some of us are ! !
More likley it is the fact that this is ” first-ever open astronaut application process in Russia’s history”. They are simply not used to it.
