You know, the funny thing is that the Outer Space Treaty was created so that the benefits of space could be enjoyed by all mankind, but we have seen amazingly few benefits from space. Up until half a decade ago, the benefits to mankind had been mostly communication, weather forecasting, and photos from space.

Even Russia and China have failed to bring the benefits of space to all mankind, keeping what little they do to themselves. At least NASA has a policy that research must be distributed to the public after five years, but little of that research has made much change in our lives.

Now we have started seeing private citizens buying entire flights to space, and so far each of the ones that Dragon has taken to orbit have performed science, engineering, or both. Varda, and a number of other companies, plan on performing space manufacturing for sale to earthbound consumers.
