Scientists: X-rays from the Helix Nebula caused by the destruction of a planet

Using data collected by multiple ground-bases and space telescopes over decades, scientists now think the previously unexplained high energy X-rays coming from the white dwarf star at the center of the Helix Nebula are caused by the destruction of a Jupiter-sized exoplanet.
The besieged planet could have initially been a considerable distance from the white dwarf but then migrated inwards by interacting with the gravity of other planets in the system. Once it approached close enough to the white dwarf, the gravity of the star would have partially or completely torn the planet apart. “The mysterious signal we’ve been seeing could be caused by the debris from the shattered planet falling onto the white dwarf’s surface, and being heated to glow in X-rays,” said co-author Martin Guerrero of The Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia in Spain. “If confirmed, this would be the first case of a planet seen to be destroyed by the central star in a planetary nebula.”
The study shows that the X-ray signal from the white dwarf has remained approximately constant in brightness between 1992, 1999, and 2002 (with observations by ROSAT, Chandra and XMM respectively). The data, however, suggests there may be a subtle, regular change in the X-ray signal every 2.9 hours, providing evidence for the remains of a planet exceptionally close to the white dwarf.

How close would Earth have to be to this event for life to be destroyed? For example, would all the other planets in the solar system of this white dwarf have their atmosphere ripped off by the increase in solar radiation caused by a planet dropping into its star?

I believe the majority of what we can see of this nebula is from the collapse of it’s star into a white dwarf… Presumably before this occured the star would have expanded into a red giant… These occured when the hydrogen and helium powering the fission reaction of the star run out to the point where gravity is stronger than the energy from the stars fission…. The red giant will “burn” up heavier elements, until the same thing occurs, and once iron is created by fission, the reactions stop…. The star then collapses again, throwing off most of its outer shell, ( hence the nebula), and the core becomes a white dwarf… Very little fission can occur in a white dwarf, it’s contents are too heavy, but ( and I’m guessing here ) if it has a huge planet breaking up and falling into it something violent will occur… Hence the x ray bursts.
Long story cut short, any planets in this system would have had many bad days WAY before this point. On a brighter note, this is pretty much the same fate that awaits our sun. When it goes all “red giant” on us, it’s diameter will encompass the earth. When it goes all “white dwarf’ the stuff thrown off will mess the rest of our solar system up, and who knows… Perhaps Jupiter’s orbit will get messed up enough so it spirals in and breaks up, and our sun will emit its own x-ray bursts…
Very fortunately we will be long gone by then… But it’s kinda fun to think about. No point in worrying tho… It’s a few billion years hence!
