The 2005 Supreme Court decision for Kelo v City of New London effectively took away all right to private property. The government can take away anyone's land via eminent domain for any reason whatsoever. In the cases directly affected Kelo, the city sued the plaintiffs who lost for back rent (dating the original date of the property confiscation).

Several states have since passed legislation to counteract this, but how effective it will be is still to be determined. Such legislation won't apply to the federal government. Local/state entities can challenge such laws in court.

I would love to say I'm an optimist, and that Americans will use the power of the vote to elect legislatures who will move us back towards a limited government. Unfortunately, I see both Democrats and Republicans as being not interested in the constitutional limitations on government. They are only interested in growing government and getting their personal share of the wealth.

The BLM, and in general the feds, already controls the vast bulk of all territory west of the Mississippi. What the hell is fueling this new hunger for land? Greens wanting human activities excluded from it? A dislike of ranchers and miners specifically? What?

One of the most troubling things to come from the standoff was Harry Reid's use of the word "terrorist". He is learning from Assad and Putin. Call your detractors terrorists and then you can justify the use of force to shut them down. I live in Jersey. I am a moderate but believe in our right to arm ourselves and protect our land from federal overreach. Just wondering if, by Harry's definition, I am a terrorist too. I have a couple of music videos that are somewhat critical of the current administration. Does that get me on a watch list? Crazy times. Gil.
