If anyone who is reading BTB comments remembers when this whole Ukraine issue started, I made an observation out of the box that Putin looked not normal. He looked bloated and different, and I proposed that his health (Alone with the arrival of the Joe Biden Democrat party machine puppet administration of desperation) may have something to do with the timing or motivation of his military moves.

And that now appears to be so.

Information? Disinformation?

Has Putin made his legacy moves to scoop up Ukraine and any other country he can to reconstitute the Russian empire before be buys the final Dacha?

Putin thought that he could balls to the wall just move into Ukraine and do as he please without much consequence.

But I think this story above demonstrates that he is now in a forced PR mode of attempting to garner favor with the world and spin his aggressive actions with some pretty little Russian thangs dressed up in some kind of Mother Tersa gear on the front line. (Fail)

Raw political warfare aggression without getting some measure of agreement and consensus from some measure of the international powers in the world is no longer acceptable. Why? Because its live and in color, 24 / 7. Technology has transformed what can and can not be done in such instances. No one in the context of an invasion and violence can hide what they are doing any more and ask for forgiveness after the fact.

(It also does not help when those you invaded are providing you with your buttocks being well kicked)

You will find many many images of whole tanks swallowed up by the MUD! And look closely many of those images are tanks swallowed up in the mu on ROADS. Every Russian military planner and ammetuer military history geek knows all about Rasputitsa. Yet still Putin makes his assault with armor, MOTORIZED forces right in the middle of Rasputitsa. This crap doesn’t dry up til JUNE!

The Donbas is great looking on a MAP. It is FLAT. Which is exactly what is wrong with it. FLAT, it does not DRAIN. All that snow melt, it just sits there and turns thousands of square miles of countryside into a soup that can literally swallow entire tanks whole.

Let me add that Steveson did his lecture for the same reasons I have done my own lectures about my own books in the past: Not to replace them but to encourage readers to read them.

Wayne: Stevenson’s book just arrived, and to compare it to his lecture illustrates my point about reading books. You have a four page transcript. I have a book whose text is 545 pages long, with another 100 or so in notes and bibliography.

To say that the lecture must simplify things would be a somewhat spectacular understatement.

I am sympathetic to your point regarding lectures & documentaries, the Gresham College lecture by Stevenson I linked above, for example, is 50 minutes, but the PDF text transcript is only 4 pages.
(Personally, I just don’t read a lot of physical books anymore.)

Steve Earle: I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I have found the amount of information you can obtain from any film documentary, no matter how well done, to be pitifully small compared to a good well-sourced written history. Moreover, from personal experience writing scripts for the Science Channel, it is rare that the visual medium can get the facts right, or prevent that medium from distorting the history, no matter how hard the filmmakers try.

Watching this documentary series after reading the histories I have just purchased might be worthwhile, but first must come the written work. Only then will I have the proper context for the images and the less detailed history provided in the documentary.

In my humble opinion.

Mitch S: I will check out Keegan’s book. I have just ordered Stephenson’s “With our Backs to the Wall,” which focuses on the end of the war.

I have found that it is a big mistake to study the history of a war without studying its military component. Sadly, that was exactly how schools taught the history of the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and both World Wars when I was growing up. I have spent a lot of time filling in those gaps.
