At least this week it has been warm here.

HLS Starship has no mass issues. Given that it will land on its tail rather than lengthwise, the “beached whale” honorific doesn’t work. “Ballerina whale” perhaps? Definitely a whale, though. And capable of swallowing Jonah, his entire family and all of their baggage and then spitting them out again on the lunar surface.

What is Starship? It’s going to be the deep space equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife.

The problem with fast iterating Starship is that it is left more schizoid than Portland’s youth…is is a Mars lander…a Moon lander?

Absent Tory, the “ship” that is ULA would have foundered long ago. Had its first CEO, Michael Gass, stuck around, there would have been no Vulcan and ULA would have been a tombstone sometime during the first Trump administration. The people Bruno is “leaving behind” would have been in the water years ago otherwise. They should all be grateful to him for an additional several years of paychecks. And those paychecks will likely continue at least until ULA has worked off its contracted backlog – five more years maybe.

Vulcan couldn’t have been Pyrios as ULA doesn’t own the IP for it. That would be Dynetics, now part of Leidos – and also AJR. I think the degree to which Dynetics would not have “worked for peanuts” is evidenced by the $10 billion bid it made for its problematical lunar lander design.

Pyrios would also have depended upon AJR being able to conjure up an improved version of F-1 after having destroyed all of the original tooling. Good luck with that. Given what AJR is charging for recreations of the RS-25, the mind fairly boggles at what a Pyrios would have cost per unit.

In earlier times, the captain stayed behind to see that others lived…but that was before naval thinking gave way to asking about parachute colors.

Vulcan should have been Pyrios. Dynetics hungered to get F-1s flying and would have worked for peanuts. J-2 upper stage. But noooo.
