Further in the article; after noting cats eyes, bicycle reflectors etc; they mention the Apollo and Soviet retrorefletors left on the moon. The article states that returns are very low (single photon) and make detection difficult.

Pardon me. I come from the 'natural' (quartz and other) crystal growth end.
'Pulling' crystal from a molten melt is another subject altogether.
Or, as growing from the 'Skull' method as Cubic Zircon.

I hope these "mirrors" do the job however they were fabricated.
