UAE gives Starlink a ten-year license
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has now given SpaceX a ten-year license to offer Starlink within the country.
The licence authorises Starlink to establish, operate and manage a public satellite communications network in the UAE, adding a space-based layer to the country’s digital infrastructure alongside terrestrial fibre-optic and 5G networks. According to TDRA on Friday, August 28, the move will diversify internet access options and strengthen the resilience, readiness and continuity of the national network. The services are expected to support key sectors, including maritime and aviation transport, energy, logistics and emergency response.
The licence will cover not only individual consumers but also businesses and government entities, as well as satellite connectivity services for the maritime and aviation sectors, in line with the UAE’s regulatory and technical frameworks.
There is a profound cultural aspect of this. Starlink will prevent the relatively moderate Islamic UAE government from blocking its citizenry from learning about alternative lifestyle options. It will also allow them to see the bad things done by the more radical elements of Islam.
Posted as we leave the Grand Canyon, heading home.
On Christmas Eve 1968 three Americans became the first humans to visit another world. What they did to celebrate was unexpected and profound, and will be remembered throughout all human history. Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8, Robert Zimmerman's classic history of humanity's first journey to another world, tells that story, and it is now available as both an ebook and an audiobook, both with a foreword by Valerie Anders and a new introduction by Robert Zimmerman.
The print edition can be purchased at Amazon or from any other book seller. If you want an autographed copy the price is $60 for the hardback and $45 for the paperback, plus $8 shipping for each. Go here for purchasing details. The ebook is available everywhere for $5.99 (before discount) at amazon, or direct from my ebook publisher, ebookit. If you buy it from ebookit you don't support the big tech companies and the author gets a bigger cut much sooner.
The audiobook is also available at all these vendors, and is also free with a 30-day trial membership to Audible.
"Not simply about one mission, [Genesis] is also the history of America's quest for the moon... Zimmerman has done a masterful job of tying disparate events together into a solid account of one of America's greatest human triumphs."--San Antonio Express-News

There’s also a practical and military aspect to this, as the IRGC has threatened the underwater internet cables.
“Heading home from the Grand Canyon”
Good to hear.

Pray for them and their families.
Indeed…. Prayers are not my thing, but I hope you are safe Bob, and my heart goes out to the missing and injured… As it does to the victims of the flood in Nepal… Dark days :-(
At the same time as the floods in Nepal happened even worse ones happened in China.
Hundreds died on camera but the Chinese government only thinks 5 people died.
I watched a video of a Chinese Nepal checkpoint getting swept away. All the buildings a dozen city busses dozens of people trying to outrun the flood. All gone in a few seconds.
And its not the first time its happened. China just ignores the dead and rebuilds right on top of the old locations.
“Starlink will prevent the relatively moderate Islamic UAE government from blocking its citizenry from learning about alternative lifestyle options. ”
They already know about all the alternative life styles and cultures. They just think those people should be just like them with death as the only alternative.
“It will also allow them to see the bad things done by the more radical elements of Islam.”
The simple fact is they already know about those things.
What we consider evil they consider a natural part of Islam and thus just fine. Moderates do dislike some of the more extreme parts of Islam and thus do not follow it they refuse to oppose those who do follow the extreme aspects.
