What China routinely does to its people when it launches rockets
Whenever China launches a rocket from one of its three interior spaceports, the lower stages of its rockets must fall within Chinese territory. Most of those rockets use very toxic hypergolic fuels, which can dissolve your skin if you come in contact with it. Though a few years ago China attempted to control the fall of those rocket stages with either parachutes or copies of the grid fins on SpaceX’s Falcon 9, those efforts were apparently a failure, and the stages continue to fall uncontrolled.
Unsurprisingly, China’s state-run press never mentions where those stages crash. Once in awhile a local resident films a nearby crash and it appears online, but usually China squashes such reports.
Yesterday however Cosmic Penguin, an X feed that posts regularly on the Chinese program, posted the picture to the right, with this commentary:
BTW what happens when 4 big SRBs [solid-rocket boosters] falls towards your place which rarely sees rockets flying/dropping things over your head? The answer is you are called to stay in a hillside’s tunnel, as seen from people here in Lingchuan County in SE Shanxi Province.

Our great motherland has launched a satellite into space, yet here I am, hiding in a cold, damp cave to escape the ravages of falling rocket debris.
The pictures that accompanied that Chinese post have been censored, so that they can no longer be viewed.
Regardless, it appears that China routinely orders large numbers of its citizens in the drop zones for these rocket stages into temporary underground shelters — in this case it looks like a road tunnel — until it knows where the stages have crashed and can institute clean-up procedures. This round-up also keeps those citizens from filming the crashes and letting the rest of the world know the callous way China treats ordinary people.
I wish I could say that this couldn’t happen in the U.S., but sadly in 2020 it did, when thugs like Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx manipulated politicians (many of whom went along eagerly) to cancel the Bill of Rights and impose similar restrictions on the entire American population.
The very nature of government is dangerous. It is a necessary evil, one that we should always try to limit to its only most necessary tasks. Ask it to do anything more, and such things above will happen, and will almost certainly lead to things far worse.

Such pictures might affect someone’s “social credit” score.
I would be interested in seeing a website that lets people see their putative Chinese ‘social credit’ score. I’d bet the people who embrace collective thought in this country, would be in the bottom third. You have to be a responsible adult to have good score.
From what I understand, one’s social credit score is an indicator of how well one conforms to the system. Those who are the most compliant have a higher score.
I’m not sure if there is a way one could check. Maybe it’s like what happened to people here in Canada over 4 years ago. Donors to the Freedom Convoy, which eventually came to Ottawa, were penalized and ostracized by, for example, having their bank accounts frozen.
There’s an app for that. I’m not kidding. I’ve seen a documentary from 2019ish that showed a young Chinese woman using it and explaining how it works. For example, you get on public transportation, you use your phone to check in (not sure if it scanned a QR code or something similar), that adds to your social credit score. Then you can go use your social credit to literally buy things from vending machines (say, a bottle of water). You do “bad thing,” like jaywalking was the example in the documentary, you not only get your score reduced, but you get publicly shamed (video of you jaywalking is put up on electronic billboards for everyone to see). The last part of the video as the woman was talking, she says (with a big giant fake smile): “it [the app, and therefore the Chinese government] probably knows more about me than I do.” For an instant, her smile fades and her expression says “I live in hell.”
No one has go fever like they do–I’m actually envious.
They are the polar opposites of Greens and NIMBY types.

Oh, I’m sure the adults hate it–but they are more accepting of that than their own COVID shutdowns.
If I had to choose between an Alabama where an occasional SuperHeavy may or may not land on my head….or Alabama today where F-4s and F-5s have howled near me…I’ll take a tunnel for the former more happily than the latter.
