I know, judd, using wood as a primary heat source gets to be quite a chore. I make a fire in our Vermont Castings only occasionally now. Something to try… You don’t actually have to burn your hickory to generate heat. When you feel cold simply move a bunch of it from one place to another.

i gave up and had my wood burning fireplaces replaced with gas last year. it just got to be too much effort. The gas is a fair simulation, but you don’t get the snap and crackle, or the shower of sparks when the wood shifts, or the smell of the smoke (i have a lot of hickory), but, on the other hand, you also don’t get the shower of sparks burning holes in the carpet or the smell of smoke. Turns on on a whim, no cleaning out ashes, and they have thermostats so the room temperature can be pretty constant.

If that were a real wood burning fireplace it would be extremely hot at that short distance in front of it, and certainly not good at all for the piano. The gas fire is still nice and warm although it can be turned off when the song is over.
