Joe: 100%. A talent with a joy that was infectious.

But. Before he became a pop icon, Prince was definitely NSFW, or anything else. My earliest recollection was the release of 'Dirty Mind' (3rd studio album) in 1980, and the title gives a good idea of the content. The album went Platinum (I bought a copy) in the US, and Silver in Britain. His follow-on effort 'Controversy' was aptly named, and he'd gone full pop by 1982's 'Purple Rain'. As Mulder said: "Great soundtrack; terrible movie."
