If 19 out of 20 of these pursuits are useless (like this one was) and the remaining one is even a modest breakthrough, it’s well worth it (so long as there are no truly catastrophic outcomes).

In too many cases, people are afraid to try the outlandish because there’s a good chance they’ll end up looking silly.
