These kind of “compare the sound” videos are completely useless on youtube, where the sound is horribly compressed and low quality to begin with. He also played pieces which were entirely in the middle range, which is important but doesn’t really show the real quality of the piano.
I am impressed with his ability and memory!
My ear can not hear a difference but I am told, by a pianist friend, that the feel is what gives them away.
In addition to what David Eastman explained above, most of us may be listening to the digitalized music on small computer extension speakers with 2in. cones in plastic boxes.
What gives a piano good sound is mostly the sound board, the cabinet, the strings, and the quality of the wood. Pianists sense whether the feel and the action are any good. The pianos in the video are so expensive because of the furniture value and possibly the name brand. Fancy cuckoo clocks for legs are quite the adornment.
Piano makers have eras when their pianos were the best. My wife has a Baldwin grand made in the 1970s. She says it was the golden age for Baldwin.
