SpaceX lands the first stage!
The competition heats up: SpaceX has successfully vertically landed its first stage after putting 11 Orbcomm satellites into orbit.
If you go to the SpaceX website they broadcast the whole thing live. And people are going crazy there right now.
I am sure they will post the video at the SpaceX website and youtube channel later today. The link to the full broadcast of the launch and landing is here. The landing sequence begins at about 25 minutes in, a little less than four minutes after launch.
On Christmas Eve 1968 three Americans became the first humans to visit another world. What they did to celebrate was unexpected and profound, and will be remembered throughout all human history. Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8, Robert Zimmerman's classic history of humanity's first journey to another world, tells that story, and it is now available as both an ebook and an audiobook, both with a foreword by Valerie Anders and a new introduction by Robert Zimmerman.
The ebook is available everywhere for $5.99 (before discount) at amazon, or direct from my ebook publisher, ebookit. If you buy it from ebookit you don't support the big tech companies and the author gets a bigger cut much sooner.
The audiobook is also available at all these vendors, and is also free with a 30-day trial membership to Audible.
"Not simply about one mission, [Genesis] is also the history of America's quest for the moon... Zimmerman has done a masterful job of tying disparate events together into a solid account of one of America's greatest human triumphs."--San Antonio Express-News
What a historic event. Congratulations to all at SpaceX who made this day possible. Go SpaceX!
Quoting Jerry Pournelle, rocketry “as God and Robert Heinlein intended it.”

They’ll be reveling like drunken trolls in Hawthorne tonight.
Awesome. Just simply awesome.
I watched it live with my son and daughter. I told them that when they are my age they’ll tell their kids that there was a time when we threw rockets away and they’ll look at you like you are crazy.
Excellent!
Too bad the president will probably have the need to point out that “they really didn’t do that”. Watch what his comments are, he will not be able to control his collective self.
Makes me wish I had pursued that Space Science degree.
Nailed it.
Bold. Forward looking. American exceptionalism.
Well done SpaceX. You have built a remarkable machine.
A stunning achievement! Anybody else tear up just a little bit?
Way to go, SpaceX!
The booster actually landed prior to the satellite releases :-)
On the cool scale, that’s sub-zero. And that rumble you felt? Thousands of college students running to the Registrar to change their major.
