Excavator mulches trees in seconds

Please consider donating to Behind the Black, by giving either a one-time contribution or a regular subscription, as outlined in the tip jar to the right. Your support will allow me to continue covering science and culture as I have for the past twenty years, independent and free from any outside influence.

An evening pause: The speed and efficiency in which this excavator mulches a tree is almost nightmarish. Makes me think of innumerable science fiction disintegrator ray guns.

Hat tip Edward Thelen.

  • I ran a tractor-mounted brush hog as a teenager. This thing is in a whole other class. I’m assuming hydraulically-driven counter-rotating saws, but, man alive. Trees just disappear.

With the right tools (a modification of this?) made from martian iron (15% of the regolith) this is how fast you could dig trenches for martian habitats. The finishing work would take a bit longer of course, but there is no reason they have to live in cramped quarters (tuna cans.)
