Readers!

The time has come for my annual short Thanksgiving/Christmas fund drive for Behind The Black. I must do this every year in order to make sure I have earned enough money to pay my bills.

For this two-week campaign, I am offering a special deal to encourage donations. Donations of $200 will get a free autographed copy of the new paperback edition of Genesis: The Story of Apollo 8, while donations of $250 will get a free autographed copy of the new hardback edition. If you desire a copy, make sure you provide me your address with your donation.

As I noted in July, the support of my readers through the years has given me the freedom and ability to analyze objectively the ongoing renaissance in space, as well as the cultural changes -- for good or ill -- that are happening across America. Fourteen years ago I wrote that SLS and Orion were a bad ideas, a waste of money, would be years behind schedule, and better replaced by commercial private enterprise. Only now does it appear that Washington might finally recognize this reality.

In 2020 when the world panicked over COVID I wrote that the panic was unnecessary, that the virus was apparently simply a variation of the flu, that masks were not simply pointless but if worn incorrectly were a health threat, that the lockdowns were a disaster and did nothing to stop the spread of COVID. Only in the past year have some of our so-called experts in the health field have begun to recognize these facts.

Your help allows me to do this kind of intelligent analysis. I take no advertising or sponsors, so my reporting isn't influenced by donations by established space or drug companies. Instead, I rely entirely on donations and subscriptions from my readers, which gives me the freedom to write what I think, unencumbered by outside influences.

Please consider supporting my work here at Behind the Black. You can support me either by giving a one-time contribution or a regular subscription. There are four ways of doing so:

1. Zelle: This is the only internet method that charges no fees. All you have to do is use the Zelle link at your internet bank and give my name and email address (zimmerman at nasw dot org). What you donate is what I get.

2. Patreon: Go to my website there and pick one of five monthly subscription amounts, or by making a one-time donation.

3. A Paypal Donation or subscription:

4. Donate by check, payable to Robert Zimmerman and mailed to

California Democrats retreat on their effort to defend child slavers

The Democratic Party: eagerly supporting pedophilia
The Democratic Party: caught in the act of eagerly
supporting pedophiles

Pigs fly! After initially killing a bill on July 12, 2023 that would have increased the penalties on child sex traffickers, the Democrats who completely control the California Assembly’s Public Safety Committee reversed course one day later and voted to advance the bill.

With a final vote of 6-0, including two abstentions from progressive Democrats, the bill now moves to the Appropriations Committee, after which, if it is approved, can move the bill to be voted upon by the entire State Assembly. If passed, SB 14 will make trafficking of minors a serious felony that would qualify under California’s three strikes law, which keeps dangerous, serial criminals off the streets, and make individuals convicted of the crime ineligible for early release. [emphasis mine]

I highlight the two abstentions by Democrats. Even after a nationwide uproar over their willingness to block harsh penalties on those who traffic young children for sexual slavery, these two Democrats, including Assembly Majority Leader Isaac Bryan (D-Los Angeles), still could not bring themselves to vote for the bill.

Nonetheless, the reversal by the rest of the Democrats on the committee marks a major event. For the past decade-plus Democrats have never backed down in almost any situation, no matter how strong the protests or opposition. For example, only two weeks ago the Fairfax, Virginia, school board made it clear it did not care that 84% of the parents in its district were publicly opposed to teaching the queer agenda in co-ed sex education classes. Despite loud protests, it ruled that beginning next year fourth grade boys and girls will be put in the same sex-ed class and taught the queer agenda together. As Fairfax County School Superintendent Michelle Reid, quipped, “Honestly, the majority doesn’t always dictate, right?”

The Fairfax school board’s arrogant actions are typical of Democrats, which makes the reversal by the Democrats controlling the California legislature so striking.

Does that reversal indicate a political shift, or simply the exception that proves the rule? At this moment it is probably the latter. I suspect these California Democrats merely changed their vote in the hope that the controversy would die down and the bill could be killed later by either the appropriations committee, or the full assembly. Based on the voting patterns of Californians, these Democrats probably still feel confident that even if they eventually vote against the bill the voters will still vote them back into power.

For this to be a real political shift it will require those California voters to finally begin voting differently. Will the uproar over the queer agenda in the public schools bring this about? It very well could. For the first time in decades the Democrats are publicly pushing policies that are so perverse and depraved that they have finally made normally lazy voters pay attention. These voters have discovered that their children are now under direct threat, and this is a threat that appears to have finally focused their minds.

The Democratic Party’s support of the queer agenda is also likely to make it more difficult for it to tamper with the voting process. Previously, it had many allies at election boards (from both parties) willing to go along with this corruption because of a bigoted hate of the Republican Party. Now, a significant number of those allies will likely end their support for Democratic Party vote tampering, having realized that the Democratic Party’s positions are simply unacceptable.

We shall have to see. This reversal suggests a major shift, but nothing is at this point guaranteed. The long term fate of this bill could in itself be a good indicator of the future trend.

The level of ignorance among voters here is astounding. I doubt 1 voter in 20 even heard about this. It won’t move the needle in the slightest. Local news here in L.A. doesn’t cover Sacramento, and the stations usually don’t even have a reporter there–and that would only reach the small number of people who bother with local news.

People here never link their vote with the consequences of their vote. They mark their ballots “D”, because that’s their tribe. After that, they forget about everything until the next time they’re in the voting booth, when they will mark “D” again.
