Genesis cover

On Christmas Eve 1968 three Americans became the first humans to visit another world. What they did to celebrate was unexpected and profound, and will be remembered throughout all human history. Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8, Robert Zimmerman's classic history of humanity's first journey to another world, tells that story, and it is now available as both an ebook and an audiobook, both with a foreword by Valerie Anders and a new introduction by Robert Zimmerman.

The print edition can be purchased at Amazon. from any other book seller, or direct from my ebook publisher, ebookit. The ebook is available everywhere for $5.99 (before discount) at amazon, or direct from my ebook publisher, ebookit. If you buy it from ebookit you don't support the big tech companies and the author gets a bigger cut much sooner.

The audiobook is also available at all these vendors, and is also free with a 30-day trial membership to Audible.

"Not simply about one mission, [Genesis] is also the history of America's quest for the moon... Zimmerman has done a masterful job of tying disparate events together into a solid account of one of America's greatest human triumphs."--San Antonio Express-News

Not surprisingly, the Democrats in Congress are rushing to outlaw this weapon, as is their typical approach to anything they don’t like: outlaw it, ban it, prohibit it, control it, restrict it.

In other related news, a news paper editor in Colorado has decided that the only fair way to debate the NRA is to send every member of the organization to prison.

No more due process in the clear-cut case of insidious terrorism. When the facts are so clearly before all Americans, for the whole world to see, why bother with this country’s odious and cumbersome system of justice? Send the guilty monsters directly to Guantanamo Bay for all eternity and let them rot in their own mental squalor.

No, no, no. Not the wannabe sick kid who blew up the Boston marathon or the freak that’s mailing ricin-laced letters to the president. I’m talking about the real terrorist threat here in America: the National Rifle Association. [emphasis mine]

Our modern liberal community: Restrict freedom, dump due process, imprison your opponents.

Readers!

Please consider supporting my work here at Behind the Black. Your support allows me the freedom and ability to analyze objectively the ongoing renaissance in space, as well as the cultural changes -- for good or ill -- that are happening across America. Fourteen years ago I wrote that SLS and Orion were a bad ideas, a waste of money, would be years behind schedule, and better replaced by commercial private enterprise. Only now does it appear that Washington might finally recognize this reality.

In 2020 when the world panicked over COVID I wrote that the panic was unnecessary, that the virus was apparently simply a variation of the flu, that masks were not simply pointless but if worn incorrectly were a health threat, that the lockdowns were a disaster and did nothing to stop the spread of COVID. Only in the past year have some of our so-called experts in the health field have begun to recognize these facts.

Your help allows me to do this kind of intelligent analysis. I take no advertising or sponsors, so my reporting isn't influenced by donations by established space or drug companies. Instead, I rely entirely on donations and subscriptions from my readers, which gives me the freedom to write what I think, unencumbered by outside influences.

Good climate, 24 hour access to a soccer field, video games, books, cable tv, food specially prepared for me, free medical care, ect.

    Most Americans would enjoy Gitmo.

  • I wonder if anyone will improve the Liberator to, I don’t know, fire more than one shot?

  • Thomas

This is just great, a gun that doesn’t show up in metal detectors- empowering Terrorists and Felons all over the world. Whats next up for Cody,t? 3-D Printable bombs? But its good gun nuts support him. It just shows how irresponsible these people have become. Since its made out of plastic, now they can give these as Christmas presents to the 5 year old children of gun nuts, so they can bring them to school for show and tell, to impress their freinds, or to accidentally blow away their freinds and loved ones. Oops, Daddy, I mad a boo-boo. I shot Mommy in the head.

  • This is getting old. Thomas, your intellectual points here are valid, reasonable, and worthwhile. I am glad to hear them. However, you completely discredit yourself by your insistence on calling those you disagree with names. There was absolutely no reason to use a term like “gun nuts” in this comment. It offends, and thus makes it easy for others to dismiss you. (There are reasonable philosophical reasons why some people think it is the right thing to create this 3D gun. You should make an effort to recognize this.)

As I said, if you cannot refrain from insulting your opponents, you will be banned from this site. I don’t want to do this, because I do appreciate your point of view, even when I disagree with it. However, at a certain point I will have to weigh your opinions against your incivility. If you don’t begin to refrain your urge to be rude very quickly you are going to lose that battle, in very short order.

This is probably your final warning.

  • “Restrict freedom, dump due process, imprison your opponents.”

That’s been the liberal playbook since at least the19th century. I recognize that the Founders were ‘liberals’, but they were liberals in the classic sense of Rousseau and the ancient Greeks. I’ve written on the need for the Left to become ever more extreme in a search for relevance. After the American and French revolutions, liberal values were mainstreamed, and that won’t do for the reactionary.

  • Probably being done right now.

  • wodun

    Wrong thread wodum…

  • mpthompson

Is this gun single shot in that it can only be used to shoot a single bullet ever? Or, does it just hold a single bullet and can be fired many times after being reloaded?

  • Pzatchok

It can be reloaded after each shot.

It looks like you have to unscrew the barrel to reload it each time.

And since the barrel is made of plastic of will NOT last long. The chamber(part the bullet and case go into while being fired) will expand a little each time its fired. Eventually the chamber will become so large it will no longer hold a shell(bullet and case) the right way for it to fire correctly.
It could also at this point possibly explode if it does go off.
I would change barrels after every 5 rounds fired at most.

There is a way to make this gun safer and last longer but that’s not the point of this project.

Just like the idea for the original Liberator pistol of WWII it was not made to be fired more than a few times.

Also it can be made to accept a variety of different ammo calibers I would not make or use it for the larger more powerful ammo. I would keep it to the smallest sizes available.

  • Pzatchok

The barrel is also NOT rifled. So the bullet does not gain stability when fired so my guess is that at about 10 feet the bullets will start to tumble end over end.
If it does this the bullet will more than likely be VERY in accurate and will more than likely not cause life threatening damage to anything it does hit.

  • JGL

Thomas you “mad” a boo boo ?

    Watch your spelling young man.

  • Thomas

Sorry Robert, but I’m at a loss for words here. What DO you call people who have become so irrational that they would support a type of gun designed for the purpose of bypassing metal detectors, which empowers terrorists and felons, and which is inherently dangerous, since it looks just like a toy?

‘Gun enthusiast’ just doesn’t cut it in this case. If it so offends you that, in this case, I used the term ‘gun nut’, that you would ban me, have at it.

Enjoy your little right wing echo chamber that you have so meticulously constructed.

  • Thomas

BTW, it would be nice if you were not such a hypocrite with your censorship.

I notice you give yourself wide liberty to name-call climate change scientists as ‘frauds’ even though not one of them has ever been convicted of fraud. None have even been brought to court for fraud. None has even been arrested for fraud.

Oh, by the way, I love how you say this is probably my ‘final’ warning, as if there have been so many others, instead of ‘this is your first warning’, since thats what it is.

  • Thomas

I recognize that the Founders were ‘liberals’, but they were liberals in the classic sense of Rousseau and the ancient Greeks.

After the American and French revolutions, liberal values were mainstreamed…

Those, at least, are actually good observations.

  • JGL

No, he has warned you before. Although I would not want him to bannish you because we need the contrast, your standard liberal reaction and narrative is an example of yours and fellow thinkers limitations to actually understand something not only on the surface, emotional level.

  • Thomas

This from the person who thinks people need to be able to answer ‘intuitively’ about the constitution, rather then knowledgeably- that having a hunch is better then having objective knowledge.
    Give me a break.

  • And your problem is you do not understand the distinction between name-calling and applying an accurate label to an individual. As I have said to you repeatedly, I call certain climate scientists frauds because I have discovered actual fraud in their scientific work. I don’t just throw out the term against people I disagree with. They committed fraud by either faking data, fudging data, or rewriting data to get the results they wanted, or deleting data that gave them results they didn’t like.

You however like to toss about insulting terms against anyone who disagrees with you. You call gun right advocates “gun nuts” based merely on the fact that they have a position you strongly dispute. (Note that I had immediately agreed that your point here had validity. I just pointed out that there was no need to be insulting.)

Anyway, you have been warned. The next time you resort to insult, you will disappear forever from this site. Note however that if you simply restrain yourself from being rude and make your points civilly, I will gladly welcome your comments, even if we disagree.

    The choice now is yours.

  • JGL

You again misrepresent what I have written, you choose your subjective interpretation becuase it fits your model of the world. You fail on so many levels.

  • wodun

I don’t find your behavior to be something worthy of a banning. Compared to the comment sections elsewhere, your comments are rather mild. Disagreements are contentious by nature.

I am not really a fan of bannings. I have tried to get people banned before but because they were talking about wanting to kill people. Banning should be for something serious like serial harassment and threats of violence.

  • Thomas

Thanks for the support. Needless to say, I agree.

  • Thomas

‘You however like to toss about insulting terms against anyone who disagrees with you. You call gun right advocates “gun nuts” based merely on the fact that they have a position you strongly dispute.’

No Robert, unlike you I recognise that there are a some amongst you ‘gun advocates’ that are taking their actions and rhetoric to such a level of extremism that the term ‘gun nut’ is ACCURATE.

I gave a few examples before of the 44% of Republicans who, at least in one survey think it may become nessessary to start shooting people. I think thats irrational.

Here is another: James Yeager, CEO of Tactical Response. Here is an article on him. You really need to watch the videos.
    http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/01/10/unhinged-tactical-response-ceo-threatens-to-start-killing-people-over-obamas-gun-control/

The article calls him ‘unhinged’. Not because he is a ‘gun advocate’ but because he is BAT SHIT CRAZY. Don’t believe me?

    Heres a quote from him:
“Vice President [Joe] Biden is asking the president to bypass Congress and use executive privilege, executive order to ban assault rifles and to impose stricter gun control,” Yeager explained in his video message. “Fuck that.”
“I’m telling you that if that happens, it’s going to spark a civil war, and I’ll be glad to fire the first shot. I’m not putting up with it. You shouldn’t put up with it. And I need all you patriots to start thinking about what you’re going to do, load your damn mags, make sure your rifle’s clean, pack a backpack with some food in it and get ready to fight.”
The CEO concluded: “I’m not fucking putting up with this. I’m not letting my country be ruled by a dictator. I’m not letting anybody take my guns! If it goes one inch further, I’m going to start killing people.”

    His original rant is here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgtJO1wHTpQ

Later, when the video went viral ( not on your site of course), he deleted where he said he is going to start killing people , but then went on to say he does not take back anything he said, and added this:
I don’t condone anybody committing any kind of felonies up to and including any aggravated assaults or murders. Because the time has not come for that…yet.’

Later, his carry permit was revoked by the state, so I’m not the only one who concluded he was unhinged, a gun ‘nut’, and a ‘serious threat to the public’.

BTW, on his later video, he also indicated he had received lots of support. So he is not alone in his views.

Gun nut? We get to decide these things for ourselves Robert. You can censor words, but not thoughts.

  • You don’t “call” them anything. Name calling has no place in civil conversation.

  • Thomas

    “No disrespect intended.”
That is a false statement, as in this very same paragraph you use the sexual term “tea baggers” to refer to the tea party movement. Nor has this been the first time you have done this. By doing so, you reveal yourself to either be intentionally rude and disrespectful to those you disagree with, or incredibly ignorant.
If you want to continue to post here, I insist that you stop with this kind of name calling. You might not like the tea party movement, but calling it dirty names is hardly a decent way for a civilized person to debate the issues.

WOW. I just noticed that on another post. Robert, you have a lot of gall to say that I intended a sexual reference. My mouth literally dropped when I read that. Its truly bizarre. The dirty mind Robert, is your own. Don’t project your own sexual weirdness in your mind onto me.

Thats really it, for me. Like Jim before me, I’m out of here. I’m not going to chaff under the threat of banishment and/or censorship merely for using words or phrases you object to, like denier, gun nut, or tea bagger. Your list of banned words or phrases is growing increasingly large, and increasingly absurd.

And as I said before, enjoy your right wing Echo chamber, and your freakishly weird attempts at mind control.

  • JGL

You should ask Anderson Cooper what the term “Tea Bagger” means, you actually used the term and did not know what it meant ?

  • Kelly Starks

Just a nit, but now a days TSA is so sloppy folks have walked onboard with hand grenades(but they’ll get your pen knife.

Heard the same arguments against the Glock pistols. Calls to ban them, etc.

Certainly the “liberator” as is, is useless for would be felons and terrorists. It does however demonstrate how new technology is invalidating the whole concept of gun bans. Given the bans disastrous results – thats likely for the best. And given the whole point of the 2nd amendment was to equip the citizens to overthrow the gov, the liberators actually something the founders would have liked.
    ;)

  • Kelly Starks

Likely just a proof of concept gun. Noteworthy for being the first – but not yet a practical gun.

  • “Thats really it, for me. Like Jim before me, I’m out of here. I’m not going to chaff under the threat of banishment and/or censorship merely for using words or phrases you object to, like denier, gun nut, or tea bagger. I guess we are in agreement, here. The links you provided to supposedly prove how reasonable it is for you to use the term “tea-bagger” for the tea party movement only show that the term is an insult.

How hard would it be to be polite and respectful to those who disagree with you? Obviously for you, impossible.

  • Doppelganger, Thomas

BTW, about the last image, which you said is ‘insulting’….I picked it for two reasons.
    1. Its from FOX NEWS- who are not exactly known for posting insulting images of the right-I figured you’d miss that point completely. Thanks for proving me right.

    2. As I looked at the picture of a man committed enough to risk ridicule that he would hang teabags from his head, and proudly I might add- this looks like the kind of Real American you pretend to admire, but don’t, of someone you really look down on (as shown by you saying its an insulting image)- who would see right thru you, thru your phoniness and hypocrisy, right thru your pretensions to ‘civility’ in the service of shutting up people who disagree with you.

So then I knew it was perfect.

PS- you never did take down the insult posted to Jim, the one calling him a ‘smug thug’- like you said you would. You kept it there, while threatening him with banishment for using the dreaded ‘d-word’- deniar, which is what you are- proving what your ‘civility’ really is: Thinly-veiled Censorship. Thought I’d never look, didn’t you?

PSS- another view of the Fox ‘teabagger’. ‘Insult’ alert! :
    http://www.tiikoni.com/tis/view/?id=57520b5

and now i really am gone… ‘banished’ as you put it… forever…
