Genesis cover

On Christmas Eve 1968 three Americans became the first humans to visit another world. What they did to celebrate was unexpected and profound, and will be remembered throughout all human history. Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8, Robert Zimmerman's classic history of humanity's first journey to another world, tells that story, and it is now available as both an ebook and an audiobook, both with a foreword by Valerie Anders and a new introduction by Robert Zimmerman.

The print edition can be purchased at Amazon. from any other book seller, or direct from my ebook publisher, ebookit. The ebook is available everywhere for $5.99 (before discount) at amazon, or direct from my ebook publisher, ebookit. If you buy it from ebookit you don't support the big tech companies and the author gets a bigger cut much sooner.

The audiobook is also available at all these vendors, and is also free with a 30-day trial membership to Audible.

"Not simply about one mission, [Genesis] is also the history of America's quest for the moon... Zimmerman has done a masterful job of tying disparate events together into a solid account of one of America's greatest human triumphs."--San Antonio Express-News

On the left, certainty and violent passion; On the right, doubt and fearful timidity; This must change!

What the left wants to destroy
What the left wants to destroy

“If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.” ― Winston S. Churchill

It is said that if you want to win a war, it is essential to know your enemy almost better than you know yourself, so that you know what will be required of you to win.

Americans, those who still believe in the Constitution and the basic values of our country — limited government and the right of each individual to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — routinely still think they are in the majority, that given a fair fight they will always win against the fascists of the left because the general public will immediately recognize the justice of the right’s cause.

This is not only a grave error, it is an error that Americans have been making for decades. Year by year since the 1960s Americans of all stripes have been unwilling to fight for right when it could have been easily won without bloodshed. Now bloodshed is almost certainly required, and the right continues to be unwilling to fight hard. Instead it still thinks its victories can be won easily, and so it is lazy about fighting those battles.

The left

To understand best why the right continues to lose, we first have to look closely at the left. As a movement, it has for decades been passionate and unwilling to compromise. Its leaders and followers are filled with certainty, and have been willing to do whatever is necessary to win.

The left's user manual
The left’s user manual

Consider for example Congress. On the left the Democrats have been united on every issue, without fail. They vote as a block, refusing all compromise with Republicans. And when a handful of Democrats are willing to compromise, such as Senator Kyrsten Sinema, she is driven from the party, and eventually driven from office. Thus, year after year the federal government has grown in size and power, because that government serves the needs and goals of the Democrats and the left. No real conservative proposal by Republicans to trim that government can get passed, because the Republican are never united enough to win, with too many of their members weak and willing to back down.

At the same time, the uncompromising determination of the left outside of government has become more violent. Where once leftist protesters rarely occupied buildings and blocked traffic, in the past decade these tactics have become their standard fare. Often those tactics have been violent, threatening every conservative that attempts to give a speech as well as the audience that wants to listen with violence. Today, this leftist intolerance routinely works to shut down cities, sometimes with wholesale riots. (Remember the Antifa and BLM riots of 2020?) And frequently those protests routinely call for the murder of those the left disagrees with.

Don’t believe me? Then consider what is happening right now at what were once considered the most elite American universities. At Yale, Columbia, MIT, and other colleges supporters of the terrorist organization Hamas are gathering daily to threaten and even commit violence against any Jews they see on campus, even as they celebrate the murder and rape of women and little Israeli children on October 7, 2023. These pro-Hamas leftist protesters not only cheer Hamas’s genocidal effort in Israel, they call for its spread to America, chanting “We’re all Hamas” and “Long live Hamas” and carrying signs saying “Hamas should kill you next” that are directed to any Jews they see on campus.

Even when the quisling university administrators at many of these so-called elite colleges brought in the police to arrest trespassers and clear the pro-Hamas mobs’ tent cities, expelling the worst student protesters, at many of these universities those mobs returned within hours and re-established their tent cities, their protests, and their threats to anyone they thought might be Jewish. They do not fear the authorities, because for decades they have been allowed to commit violent protests without punishment.

Nor will their certainty end there. As the left accumulates more power it abuses it more eagerly. Soon they will not only work to imprison their opponents while imagining their death — as they have been doing to Donald Trump for almost eight years — the left will soon be using its power to make those imagined deaths happen.

The left is always certain, and unwilling to bow to any discussion. It will get what it wants, and will destroy anyone that dares challenge it.

The Right

Meanwhile, Americans who believe in liberty and free speech and the rule of law have been steadily losing ground for decades, to a point today that such people, of which I consider myself proudly as one, are now a somewhat powerless minority, ignored by most and despised by many. We stand now somewhere between the last two stages described by Churchill above, fighting “with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival,” and fighting “when there is no hope of victory.”

We have come to this state because in almost every battle the right consistently makes deals that forces it to retreat. And though there are a few on the right who are willing to fight hard for its principles, they are a small minority and are treated with contempt by their own side. They might score some victories, but usually those victories achieve little while doing nothing to stymie the left’s march to power.

As a perfect example, consider again the present anti-Semitic protests at Columbia University. The situation has gotten so bad, with Jewish students now routinely threatened and harassed, that one prominent rabbi there is now telling Jewish students to leave the campus and not come back.

“The events of the last few days, especially last night, have made it clear that Columbia University’s Public Safety and the NYPD cannot guarantee Jewish students’ safety in the face of extreme antisemitism and anarchy,” Rabbi Elie Buechler told students Sunday morning over WhatsApp. “It deeply pains me to say that I would strongly recommend you return home as soon as possible and remain home until the reality in and around campus has dramatically improved.

Note the difference between the left and the right. University officials arrest leftist protesters and expell a bunch. The leftists simply come back the next day in large numbers. “We will not be moved,” they chant. On the right the advice is to run and hide, to give ground to these thugs and goons.

And so, the left wins again and the right retreats, handing the university to those thugs and goons to run and control.

The solution?

In order for the lovers of freedom and the American dream to finally win, the right is going to have to finally stop compromising. Everyone on the right has got to be willing to call out the left for its evil, every single time.

If you have friends and neighbors who are timid or unwilling to stand for freedom and against the left’s bigoted Marxist and queer agenda, you need to call them out on it, every chance you get. No more nice guy. Politeness is no longer acceptable. It is necessary to wake everyone up. And if your friends or relatives are offended by what you say then you must turn it back on them and tell them that you are offended by them. Millions died to give them liberty and freedom, and they don’t have the courage to defend it themselves.

If you can help drag more conservatives to the polls then do so. Right now there are numerous organizations, including the Republican Party, that are putting together aggressive get-out-the-vote campaigns. Find out who they are in your area and find time to help. Don’t sit on your hands. Do something!

The right has also got to unify. Stop attacking our own side viciously or blindly for petty reasons. And while becoming unifited so the right has to provide as much support as it can for those at the front lines. When leftist protesters get arrested, they receive free legal help and strong support from many leftist non-profits. The same has got to be done for those on the right, with even more force. If you are a lawyer you need to volunteer some time providing free legal help to such people.

Politically, conservatives in power have got to stop making deals with the left. And the voters have got to throw out every Republican who does so. No more compromises can be tolerated, because we have reached a point where any compromise might very well compromise America out of existence.

Gadsden flag

Finally, it is time to stop being afraid. Take risks. Don’t run away from the thugs. Stand up to them. This carries risks, but freedom is not won by running from bullies. It is lost if you run.

And we have been losing our freedom for decades because of our fear and timidity. It is now almost entirely gone. If we don’t soon gather the courage to fight, then it will be entirely gone, and we will find ourselves fighting “when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.”

Readers!

Please consider supporting my work here at Behind the Black. Your support allows me the freedom and ability to analyze objectively the ongoing renaissance in space, as well as the cultural changes -- for good or ill -- that are happening across America. Fourteen years ago I wrote that SLS and Orion were a bad ideas, a waste of money, would be years behind schedule, and better replaced by commercial private enterprise. Only now does it appear that Washington might finally recognize this reality.

In 2020 when the world panicked over COVID I wrote that the panic was unnecessary, that the virus was apparently simply a variation of the flu, that masks were not simply pointless but if worn incorrectly were a health threat, that the lockdowns were a disaster and did nothing to stop the spread of COVID. Only in the past year have some of our so-called experts in the health field have begun to recognize these facts.

Your help allows me to do this kind of intelligent analysis. I take no advertising or sponsors, so my reporting isn't influenced by donations by established space or drug companies. Instead, I rely entirely on donations and subscriptions from my readers, which gives me the freedom to write what I think, unencumbered by outside influences.

It’s almost as if the right is morally disarmed.

The Columbia example is not really correct: There is no “right” at Columbia, only varying shades of Marxism. The Administration has no real desire to expel the creeps, because they are Fellow Travelers and are all on the same side.

I do not believe that we are a minority, but the lockstep rigidity of The Message and it’s heavy rotation on every Media outlet leads one to believe that. Ex: We know that blacks make up 12% of the U.S. population, yet their representation in, say, commercial advertising leads to average viewer to believe this percentage is far higher. People come to believe what they see.

Where are the “hard hats” of 1970 that marched on Wall Street ?

The left consistently preaches “tolerance” & “diversity”; their actions show they have zero regard for either.

“The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.”

Between the left and the right, many Americans are simply struggling to survive and to stay afloat amidst the increasing chaos. (The center is indeed not holding, and anarchy has been loosed upon the world.) Lacking any grounding in history or civics and too busy to look very deeply into what’s behind their shiny object-based news feeds, is hard for busy, distracted people to think critically about the narrative of the left or to parse the societal concerns of the right. But they can tell when things are not working and their interests are not being considered by the entrenched Powers That Be.

Others remain happily indifferent to politics, and — if they have the wherewithal — go on with the pursuit of life as usual and hope that nothing bad will happen to them even as the “falling apart” intensifies. (It can’t happen here and/or it won’t affect me.) Preserving civilization is not *their* problem, and there is nothing, they tell themselves, that they can do.

For better or for worse, the conservative right is the only agency that — paraphrasing William H. Buckley — stands athwart the narrative of the left and (sometimes, with varying degrees of conviction) yells “stop.” As Robert observes, “we have been losing our freedom for decades because of our fear and timidity. It is now almost entirely gone. If we don’t soon gather the courage to fight, then it will be entirely gone, and we will find ourselves fighting ‘when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.'”

Where, however, are the leaders on the right who can effectively articulate such ideas to a distracted and demoralized electorate? Vivek Ramaswamy comes to mind, but Governor DeSantis, as effective as his policies may be, can’t seem to catch fire with many voters outside of Florida. Lacking traditional oratorical skills*, Donald Trump does inspire the loyalty of many people as a self-made populist / outsider / iconoclast, but he puts off an equal number of people on the left who see him as a veritable Antichrist. Worse, Republicans as a whole don’t even seem to understand their own narrative about preserving human freedom and opportunity, let alone having any willingness to fight for it.

*Imagine him reassuring us with a Roosevelt-style fireside chat, charming / inspiring us like John F. Kennedy, or exhibiting the self depreciating humor of Ronald Reagan. Like the Batman, Trump may not be the leader that we want, but he may be the street fighter that we need.

Antifa / BLM / pro-Hamas radicals are not organic. They are tools of the government. If the FBI did it’s job they would immediately cease to exist.

    Milt:
    One of my favorite poems!

“Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;”

Minor edit in third paragraph before “The Right”:
“Even when the quisling university administrators”

  • To Milt and Wayne: I was certain that someone would bring up Yeats. Though he is one of my favorite poets and this particular poem a great one, I purposely did not refer to it in my essay because I have begun to believe that people use it almost as an excuse for our weakness. “We can’t do anything, because our side has no passion!”

Why do we want Yeats to be right in this matter? Shouldn’t we demand he is wrong?

If the FBI did it’s job they would immediately cease to exist.

The subjunctive mood is not helpful. If wishes were Teslas, beggars would ride.

A more constructive response would perhaps be: Premise granted. How do we make the FBI do its job?

  • markedup2

Replying to myself before the original comment even appears…

I do not grant that premise that this is an federal problem. It’s not even a state problem. It’s a city (or perhaps county) problem. Arrest these people. If they’re not local, jack up bail as a flight risk. If they’re from across state lines, jack up bail even further.

This is not an FBI issue. It’s a local law enforcement issue.
