Readers!

My July fund-raising campaign to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary since I began Behind the Black is now over. I want to thank all those who so generously donated or subscribed, especially those who have become regular supporters. I can't do this without your help. I also find it increasingly hard to express how much your support means to me. God bless you all!

The donations during this year's campaign were sadly less than previous years, but for this I blame myself. I am tired of begging for money, and so I put up the campaign announcement at the start of the month but had no desire to update it weekly to encourage more donations, as I have done in past years. This lack of begging likely contributed to the drop in donations.

No matter. I am here, and here I intend to stay. If you like what I do and have not yet donated or subscribed, please consider supporting my work here at Behind the Black. You can support me either by giving a one-time contribution or a regular subscription. There are four ways of doing so:

1. Zelle: This is the only internet method that charges no fees. All you have to do is use the Zelle link at your internet bank and give my name and email address (zimmerman at nasw dot org). What you donate is what I get.

2. Patreon: Go to my website there and pick one of five monthly subscription amounts, or by making a one-time donation.

3. A Paypal Donation or subscription:

4. Donate by check, payable to Robert Zimmerman and mailed to

The left’s hatred and violence is finally driving people away

Erika Kirk, at the moment she publicly forgave her husband's murderer
Erika Kirk, at the moment she publicly forgave
her husband’s murderer. Click for video.

As numerous pundits on the web have already noted, the assassination of Charlie Kirk last week has clarified most starkly the political divide in both the United States as well as across the world.

On the right, we have Kirk’s widow yesterday speaking at a memorial service for her husband, and with tears standing before the world to forgive his killer.

I forgive him. I forgive him because it was what Christ did, and it is what Charlie would do. The answer to hate is not hate. The answer, we know from the Gospel, is love. And always love. Love for our enemies, and love for those who persecute us.

Her speech matched the general tone of most of the speakers at that memorial service. The service itself, as well as the numerous peaceful candlelight vigils nationwide in memory of Kirk, illustrate clearly the response of the right to this heinous act. No riots, no violence, no calls for bloodshed. Only prayer and a cold fury to make sure such violence never happens again.

That tone was set by Kirk himself, before he died. All he ever did was want to debate his very mainstream conservative ideas with leftists, with good will and rationality. He proved it in a text he sent to leftist pundit Van Jones just before his murder:

I’d love to have you on my show to have a respectful conversation about crime and race. I would be a gentleman as I know you would be as well. We can disagree about the issues agreeably.

The left’s response to Kirk however has been not love or good will but hate. Hundreds and hundreds of partisan leftists went on social media to gleefully celebrate his assassination. Leftist politicians and entertainers defamed both him and what he stood for, with lies and slanders. And when the television show of one entertainer, Jimmy Kimmel, got canceled by ABC because Kimmel had falsely claimed on the air that a Trump supporter had killed Kirk, one leftist and former teacher’s union employee decided it was okay to protest Kimmel’s cancellation by firing multiple bullets into the offices of an ABC affiliate in Sacramento. The man, Al Hernandez Santana, also has an extensive X feed where he had expressed hate for Donald Trump, often wishing him dead.

He is clearly not sane, but he is also not an outlier on the left. The response of the left to Kirk’s murder has revealed that for too many Democratic Party supporters, Santana is mainstream.

There are not two sides

This contrast actually isn’t new, but it has never been so visible. And because of that visibility it has not gone unnoticed by the general public, the people who normally don’t follow politics closely and in the past had simply refused to recognize the growing absolute differences between the right and the left.

They are noticing now, and the consequences have been most illustrated by the surge in Republican voter registrations across multiple states.

The rate of Republican registrations in Florida tripled in the days immediately following Kirk’s slaying. “Since Charlie was killed we’ve been seeing about 600 new Republican voters a day,” Florida GOP chair Evan Power told The Post. “We [usually] average about 200 a day, so 600 is a much bigger number—it’s a big deal.”

…Crucial swing state Pennsylvania saw a similar surge after Kirk’s killing. Republican voter registration doubled that week compared to previous averages. The Keystone State clocked 2,148 new GOPers the week ending Sept 13, compared to 1,018 the week before. Democrats, by comparison, gained a measly 400 or so voters for each of those weeks.

And it’s not just happening in red, or purple, states. Leticia Munoz of the Republican Party of New Mexico told The Post that from Wednesday — the day Kirk was killed — to Sunday, 78 Democrats approached her booth at the New Mexico state fair to change their registration to Republican.

This registration shift had been noted earlier, but the numbers in the past week are quite startling. More detailed analysis confirms these anecdotes.

Decision Desk HQ’s Data Science Team recently found a sharply pro-Republican trend in voter registration among 18-to-29 year olds, a group constituted almost entirely by members of Generation Z (often defined as those born after 1996). This was especially true among young men under 30, who exhibited a noticeable decline in Democratic registration, especially compared to women in the same age group. Looking just at white voters under 30 who were registered with the two major parties on Jan. 1, 2025, only about 37% of men were registered Democrats, compared with around 56% of women.

But the decline in Democratic registration was most apparent among the very youngest white voters. Among those ages 18 to 24, only about one-third were registered as Democrats, including only about 3 in 10 voters aged 18 to 20. The very youngest women also dropped below 50% Democratic registration. Now, young voters of any race or ethnicity are more likely to register as unaffiliated or as something besides Democratic or Republican, so that is an added complication with voter registration numbers. However, white men under 25 are basically the most Republican-leaning age group by party registration if we only look at voters registered with the two main parties.

This trend in GOP preference was not apparent among only young white men, but also among young men of color. Although voters of color are broadly more Democratic than white voters, the very youngest voters registered with the two major parties are getting closer to 50-50 in their party registration: As of Jan. 1, fewer than 60% of nonwhite men who were 18 to 20 were registered Democrats across two-party registration.

That young voters are registering Republican is a major change. For decades large majorities of young people routinely registered as Democrats. These numbers indicate a very fundamental culture change that should have an impact for decades.

The left's continuous move to the left and madness
The left’s continuous move to the left and madness

Yet, does the left recognize these facts and rethink its public strategy? No. Despite the evidence that the left’s hateful rhetoric and violent actions have only damaged its brand and driven people away, the Democratic Party’s leadership and its radical left base in academia and the entertainment business seem incapable of recognizing these facts. Instead, it doubles down. Just one example, Democrat congresswoman Ilhan Oma (D-Minnesota) this weekend continued to slander Kirk, claiming his words were “reprehensible” while defending her past statements that Kirk was a “monster” and “Dr. Frankenstein”.

Meanwhile, on the left this weekend we had another shooting during a wedding in New Hampshire, the shooter screaming “Free Palestine!” as he killed one person and injured several others. Some might argue that supporting Palestinians in Israel does not make this man a leftist, but that would be dishonest. It is the left that has backed not only the Palestinians, but Hamas, and have done so frequently and in public, with violence and hate.

This blindness on the left and within the Democratic Party however is a very good thing. It has become insane, and insanity will only rarely win out in any conversation. Either it reforms itself, or it will soon be gone as a viable political movement.

The Left hates not just Charlie Kirk, but anyone not of the Left.

Despite all its slogans and sayings in reference to tolerance, such as “COEXIST”, the Left has no tolerance at all. IT demands that all fall in line, or that all be controlled.

The left is in total fear. On every level,

I drive our local Democrat head quarters every day. Since Mr Kirk was shot they have been barricading their doors with vans parked blocking them 24 hours a day.

The other day a group of Democrats was walking the neighbor hood trying sign people up.
The next day an anti war group came by looking for donations and sign ups. (Found out they were really a pro Palestine lefty group.) And they really tried to hide who they actually were.

It looks like the democrats are now looking to hide who they really are and are looking for middle of the road pro life candidates.
Trying to fool moderate Dem voters.

Watch for this tactic. When you see it post it every place you can. The midterms are very important this time around and we on the right have a great chance of taking a bunch of new seats.

Let’s hope that the new Republican registrants – who seem to have learned fast, that Republicans have the Constitution at heart, and the Democrats don’t – let’s hope they don’t forget fast too.

  • Jeff Wright

They may try to infiltrate some local Libertarian groups, who actually have no use for Americans they would sell out in moving factories overseas.

I remember the convention where Trump razzed them about five percent of the vote–but what really stood out was this bald open-borders stooge whose name escapes me.

The DNC will likely back country club Republicans who look down their noses at the rank and file.

They’ll have their pictures taken with hunting gear and Bibles to be sure. Don’t fall for it.

When I was in college, [*cough*] decades ago, the leftists would shut down someone who didn’t agree with them, then as he went away licking his emotional wounds, the leftists would pat each other on the back and remind themselves that they were intolerant only of intolerance. It sounded like they were the perfect ones, but the reality was obvious that they defined “intolerant” as anyone who disagreed with them.

This behavior had several advantages. First, it helped them shut down disagreeable free speech. Second, they then felt better about themselves, despite being obvious bullies. Third, it kept all the leftists in line, as anyone who strayed from the politically-correct opinions of the day (and they changed often*) would be shunned and receive the same treatment as those they called “intolerant.” Fourth, it kept them segregated from those who had different ideas, opinions, or wanted to say disagreeable things.

A disadvantage is that they really have no idea what the rest of the world thought, because they just won’t listen to anything disagreeable. I do believe that this disadvantage is biting them in the gluteus maximus today. Being segregated from reality (right down to not being able to define a woman, other than “I’ll know one when I claim to be one”) prevents them from understanding their opposition, or anyone else, for that matter.

So, if Charlie Kirk says anything disagreeable, he is subject to being called “fascist,” “racist,” “Nazi,” “homophobe,” “transphobic,” “hate-monger,” “Hitler,” “hater,” “denier,” “misogynist,” “bigot,” “reprehensible,” “monster,” and “Dr. Frankenstein.” He is the intolerant one, not those who are unable to tolerate having him on the planet.

Ilhan Omar is the Dr. Frankenstein that she claims Kirk to be. Even the words that she uses now are designed to influence impressionable people. It seems that she has long succeeded in influencing them, all right, but many of them are no longer influenced in the way she desires. By the way, if Omar had read Shelly’s book, the creation does not turn on the doctor but turns to him to make a fellow creature as his wife. It is the rest of the world that the creation harms or threatens to harm, and [*** SPOILER ALERT *** Stop reading here, if you want to be surprised by the end and beginning of the book] the doctor ends up chasing the creature across the arctic.

    * Even the leftists said that there needed to be a “PC Magazine” (Politically Correct, not the Personal Computer “PC Magazine” that had existed at the time) in order for everyone to be able to keep up with the rapidly changing PC opinions, attitudes, and battlecries. Many leftist students were being meanly chastised when they failed to keep up with the latest PC change. How terrible it was to think you were one of the tolerant ones, only to discover suddenly that you were considered intolerant for saying something today that you were cheered for saying yesterday.

  • “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall”

At this point it is hard to envision any kind of a soft landing for the Democrats. As Robert points out, “The Democratic Party’s leadership and its radical left base in academia and the entertainment business seem incapable of recognizing [their declining popularity with those registering to vote and their polling numbers]. Instead, it doubles down.”

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich would seem to concur, and as he stated in an interview earlier today:

“[F]irst of all, we are in the early stages of a cultural civil war, which is very real, and I think that that’s hard for people to grasp. But the people on the other side are totally sincere. We may think that they’re crazy, we may think that they make no sense, but they inside their worldview, they’re faced with annihilation because the American people and President Trump have come together to fundamentally go back to classic American values and classic American rules.”

    and

“[At America’s New Majority Project polling] we guessed that somewhere between fifteen and twenty percent of the American people side with the big government socialists and their weird values, and the rest of the country clearly opposes them. And so what you’re going to see is more and more, I think, the fervor and fanaticism as they literally see all the things that they want to happen disappear, as the American people sort of return to a core belief in the constitution, in the work ethic, and the right to rise based on meritocracy, and a whole range of things, all of which are direct threats to the people on the left who are speaking in such harsh language.”

    https://omny.fm/shows/the-sean-hannity-show/cultural-divide-september-22nd-hour-2

Similarly, James Howard Kunstler observed this morning that:

“In our country these days, all of this has apparently produced two camps at war psychologically, now verging on something like a hot civil war. One camp calling itself ‘progressive’ insists on a roster of ideas, policies, and practices that look patently absurd, abusive of the public interest, and hostile to the values of Western Civ. The other camp styles itself as ‘conservative’ seeking to preserve Western Civ and the advancement of our so-called way of life — an ever growth-seeking high-tech economy.”

    https://www.kunstler.com/p/personal-note

The question is what that 15 to 20 percent of America-hating, would-be Marxist revolutionaries will “do” when they are pressed to the wall, and what the rest of America will do in response. “The Squad” is clearly not backing down, and neither is Governor Newsom in California. Instead, he is *defying* the Trump Administration in every way that he possibly can, and he seems no more willing to accept defeat and come to terms than Hamas, who is willing to fight to the death of the last Palestinian. (Rather like the mayor of Chicago, who cares nothing for how many black kids are gunned down in his city every weekend. He’ll hang on until the last dead kid.)

After World War II, America had the daunting task of trying to extirpate Nazi ideology in Germany and upending the unquestioning fealty of the Japanese people to their Emperor and the Warlord class. Now, we seem to be faced with dismantling the ideological armature of an intractable domestic enemy that is no less — and probably even more — dedicated to the destruction of our country / culture / society than the Axis Powers once were. All to be done, of course, within the framework of the Constitution, the Rule of Law, and the better angels of our nature.

    pzatchok,

Nexstar and Sinclair have both announced that Kimmel’s show is not coming back to their stations. This should have a significant effect on Kimmel’s ratings, perhaps even enough to put his show “underwater” in terms of revenue vs. cost. If that happens, then it’s just a matter of how much bleeding Disney/ABC will tolerate before Kimmel goes the way of Colbert.

    Edward & Milt,

Good analogy to the post-WW2 denazification of Europe. The psychology of Nazism, Fascism and Japanese militarism was basically the same as a typical religious cult, just at a larger scale. That’s very much true of contemporary woke progressivism as well. The main approach to marginalizing the various Axis ideologies started with their defeat and removal from power. A decent start has been made on that process here in the US anent woke progressivism, but it needs to be both extended and defended.

That will include systematically cutting off the left’s access to funding. DOGE and Trump’s recent move to end at least some of the unionization of federal workforces are good starts. The harrowing of the NGOs will produce additional progress. Something also needs to be done about foundations and university endowments.

The Democratic Party has, for much of its history, been essentially a protection racket. Power was its product. Keep it out of power and no one will feel compelled to contribute anymore in order to avoid being destroyed. That will reduce the Democratic Party to the marginal coastal elite rump it actually is. There will be people who contribute out of ideological conviction for awhile, but without vast quantities of Other People’s Money coerced or stolen from the general public, the Democratic Party will dwindle and become just another of those irrelevant 1% or 2% parties that the country has always had plenty of.

Getting a new census ASAP that excludes non-citizens from Congressional, state and local redistricting computations would be a big additional non-monetary step. Doing that will assist in taking back the governments of so-called “blue” states from the goblins currently running them. And there must also be a concerted push to turf woke progressives out of academe.

    Jeff Wright,

As you correctly note, the left has long since gobbled up the Libertarian Party. I was fairly heavily involved in Libertarian Party politics in the early 1980s and one could see the beginnings of the leftist takeover even then. That was among the larger of the reasons I left the LP in the mid-80s.

  • Jeff Wright

Harry Browne is about the only libertarian I could name after Stossel–even Harry got booed when he supported missile defense. That alone should have soured anyone.

I liked Browne–he seemed like a real human being. The rest in that audience struck me as absolutely feral.
