If you have any doubts that we live in a revised version of 1930s Germany, you need only open your eyes for only a few seconds and read these stories below. The list is hardly comprehensive, as it only provides a small sampling of the vicious, violent, and hateful demonstrations, riots, and violence that began after October 7th in support of the rape, torture, and murder by Hamas of more than 1,400 Israelis, many of whom were women and children, and have since morphed into an anti-Jewish compaign designed to intimidate and oppress Jews everywhere, merely because they are Jews.

The mob in front of the Israeli embassy in the third link above made very clear, in blunt chants, what all these pro-Hamas demonstrators want, as well as who they are:
A cadre of pro-Palestinian protesters told Jews leaving a Hanukkah celebration at the Israeli Embassy, “We will kill you all.” Video of the horrifying incident went viral on social media on Tuesday, which showed a Jewish man walking down the street as a car drove past him with two people waving a Palestinian flag out the window while shouting, “We will kill you all, occupiers.”
In a social media post, Jonathan Allen, government relations for the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), said that they also shouted, “We were ‘Nazis like Hitler.’” [emphasis mine]
You will note also that only this demonstration at the Israeli embassy was actually protesting Israel’s actions in Gaza directly. All the others simply focused on threatening people simply because they are Jewish, even though they have literally no connection to events in Gaza, and even less say.
Essentially, these mobs are nothing more than a new collection Nazi storm-troopers. The Jews are their scapegoat, and their actions are fueled by bigoted hate that has no connection to rationality or civilized behavior.
Nor have these mobs only attacked Jews. Christians have been victims as well, such as when a mob stormed a mall in Ottawa on December 17th: Anti-Israel Activists Surround and Terrorize Line of Kids Going to See Santa at Mall. In this case these brownshirts screamed vile chants at little children and their parents, who were simply there to see Santa.
What makes a Nazi?
These new Nazis are not identical to the Nazis under Hitler, but they carry many of the same attributes. It is helpful for civilized people to recognize these traits, so that we can effective oppose these insane tyrants while learning how to act differently.

First, they are ignorant. For example, when asked what locations the chant “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” refers to, less than half the students screaming this chant could name the river or the sea.
Some of the alternative answers were the Nile and the Euphrates, the Caribbean, the Dead Sea (which is a lake) and the Atlantic. Less than a quarter of these students knew who Yasser Arafat was (12 of them, or more than 10%, thought he was the first prime minister of Israel). Asked in what decade Israelis and Palestinians had signed the Oslo Accords, more than a quarter of the chant’s supporters claimed that no such peace agreements had ever been signed.
To put it simply, those who join these mobs calling for the murder of Jews (or any other group) generally haven’t the faintest idea what they are supporting.
Second, that ignorance allows their beliefs to be based, not on facts, but on irrational emotions. A rational, civilized person doesn’t normally gather in a crowd and chant slogans. Instead, you read up on the subject and think about it. This thoughtful approach allows one to come to reasonable conclusions.
Nazi-like protesters however are not interesting in thinking. They are certain they are right, and thus it is time to harness their emotions to impose their ignorant conclusions on all, through shouting, intimidation, and violence if necessary.
Third, those emotions are focused on the hatred of groups of people. With both the 1930s Nazis as well as these Hamas supporters, the group targeted are Jews, but it could just as well be blacks in the Deep South, Armenians in the Ottoman empire, or Tutsis in Ruwanda. In every case these bigots decide that some people of a certain race, religion, or ethnicity is morally and physically inferior, are the cause of all the world’s problems, and must be eliminated unmercifully.
Finally, these new Nazis are similar to the old Nazis in that both are and were part of a collective political movement from the left side of the political spectrum. Remember, the offical name of Hitler’s movement was “national socialism“, with many leftist goals that are indistinguishable from the goals of today’s left.
The Austrian monarchist Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn proposed that the 25-point Program was pro-labour: “[T]he program championed the right to employment, and called for the institution of profit sharing, confiscation of war profits, prosecution of usurers and profiteers, nationalization of trusts, communalization of department stores, extension of the old-age pension system, creation of a national education program of all classes, prohibition of child labour, and an end to the dominance of investment capital”.
Nor do the modern pro-Hamas movement’s links to Islam change this. Islamic thinking is also as collective in thinking and as bigoted against anyone who is not Muslim.
The bottom line is that Nazi-like movements gather to them ignorant, emotional individuals who need to be part of a monolithic group, united in their belief that because others are the cause of all their problems, they must be eliminated, by any means necessary. In today’s world organizing such a movement has become even easier than in 1930s Germany, because it is so simple to link up via social media, and then use that media to schedule large demonstrations and violent protests.
And so, American now live in a world of Nazi storm-trooper tactics. Once such behavior would have been so thoroughly and immediately condemned that it would have stopped almost instantly. Now, we cower in fear of it, and do little to stop it — just as did the Germans in 1930s.
If we don’t start standing up forcefully with courage — as free Americans once did without hesitation — the bad guys are going to win totally, if they have not done so already.

I think a lot of Americans look at 1930s and 1940s Germany and wonder how could that happen in a western nation.
The events over the past two months have gone a long way in my understanding of that history, things no longer seem so distant or implausible.
Really running out of words on the current state of the country.
John: Americans today wonder how this could happen here, because they really don’t think or care about it enough. Nor do they appear to have the courage to act.
Past generations of Americans, especially before 1970, cared about these issues deeply, and would never have allowed anything like this to happen. They did not like bullies, and were not afraid to stand up to them. Thus, the bullies knew better than to act out.
There will likely not be anything like what happened in Germany as long as the US never experiences truly extreme economic issues. I mean serious hard times, like the nation has not had since the 1930’s. A world war could also do it. Those who argue otherwise tend to point out individual exceptions. They also compare the poorest of the poor today to the top 10% of the population in 1945. Likewise, it is misleading to point to a decline in real wages in the last few decades. This need not lead to a depression era average standard of living.
What we are seeing now in the US is NOT like Germany between the world wars. What Zimmerman is reacting to is more analogous to the Macarthy era persecution of Communists. The same is true for most persecutions motivated by political correct propaganda. Its effects will be relatively mild until and unless the masses experienced horrible times and need some easy target to blame. In that case we really could be like Hitler’s Germany. But that would require extreme hard times, NOT something like COVID or the Vietnam war.
Cloudy: Hm. I wonder if you could find similar examples of rioting and aggressive outright bigotry that we see today in the 1950s, except in the Deep South. I doubt it. If anything, the McCarthy era was when the civil rights movement was gaining real steam over most of the country, and was in fact pushing hard into the Deep South to force change there.

Exactly what do you think we should do, specifically, to stand up to these bullies? Before the 1970s, before the hippies, we civilians did not need to stand up to the bullies, because the school administrations and teachers would not put up with it. The police would not stand idly by. The politicians would not let the police stand idly by, and the courts would have thrown the book at them.
Today, the people we have hired to provide for domestic tranquility are failing us. They have taken the side of the bullies and have become part of the bullying population and movements. The courts we hired to peaceably resolve disputes are just letting the bullies back out on the streets, allowing them to continue their actions, letting them know that they have yet reached the level of evil that would make the courts rein them back.
What exactly do we do to stand up to the bullies without winding up in jail ourselves?
I ask again, what should the German civilians have done to stop their NAZIs after they gained the power? Our Nazis are now in power and have the authority over us. What lesson should we learn from Germany, almost a century ago, that we can apply now to save freedom and liberty?
When such a protest happens at a university or other location, what actions should we take in order to successfully stand up to them rather than be January 6th-ed by the very police and judges that are on the Nazi side?
Edward: To be honest, I haven’t the faintest idea what can be done, and in fact, I had concluded after the 2020 election that we almost certainly face collapse before recovery. I always hope my pessimistic predictions are wrong, and this one is especially dire, so I have tried not to underline it.
We are no longer a moral society, which in itself is the fundamental problem. Too many people see no reason to act morally, and so they don’t. And that includes all the individuals running our institutions that you list.

To answer your question about what National Socialism is: It is a political movement that combines left and right elements at the same time. It is not for nothing that the National Socialists themselves call it the third way. National Socialism rejects both capitalism (or the liberalism behind it) and communism. Yes, the leaders of nationalism called themselves socialists, but they did not mean the egalitarian socialism of the communists. National socialism is based on a mythical nationalism.
Was National Socialism Fascist? It’s also a question that isn’t really easy to answer in just a few words. Yes and no. Interestingly, reputable historians say that Hitler’s National Socialism was more similar to Stalin’s Soviet state than Mussolini’s fascist state in terms of state organization.
As for Israel today, it is fair to say that it is an apartheid state (identified by various organizations) in which the extreme right currently holds power. Should we call them als Nazis?

One can argue about how the term “West” should be historically defined in geopolitical terms. Today it is practically identical to the sphere of influence of the US empire. In my view, before the end of the Second World War, Germany was not part of this “West” as you suggest, but rather stood alone between East and West, with ties to the West (France, England, etc.), but also to the East (Russia, etc.) . According to the US political scientist Friedman (2015), one of the main goals of US foreign policy over the last 120 years has been to draw Germany towards the West rather than towards the East, i.e. to prevent Germany and Russia from coming together closely.

Robert, “standing up forcefully with courage” means shooting them on sight, because force is all they respect. Not “norms”, not laws: force.

It is going to suck if you are the baby that gets thrown out with the bath water but that is going to happen. Be smart and don’t put yourself in harms way as best you can.

It is a difficult question to answer. As far as I know, no people have successfully rescued themselves from a forming tyranny, so we have no examples to follow or to learn from. The closest thing that I know of was Tiananmen Square, although that tyranny was already four decades established. Where did they go wrong, and how do we avoid a similar disaster?
The United States rescued itself from a long-term tyranny, but that required violence, some temporary loss of morality, and a declaration as to why the revolution was deemed necessary to demonstrate that there were legitimate grievances. If we must resort to violence, then it should be organized violence to retrieve our freedom and liberty. Also, a similar declaration is necessary, otherwise it looks like some sort of spontaneous, ill considered insurrection.
What we really need is some sort of peaceful resistance or counter revolution. Gandhi succeeded, but once again, that was against an established tyranny, and in addition, it was already conducive to setting colonies free.
We are dealing with marxists, whose purpose is not to be moral but to use any means necessary to screw the people they rule, sometimes to the point of starvation. They believe in central control rather than individual liberty. They believe that if they let their people make their own decisions, to make their own choices, they will choose wrong every single time.

I can name a coup that was overthrown before it managed to take hold.
Major General Smedley Butler exposed a fascist coup plot that aimed to take over America in the 1920’s-30’s.
A small group of high profile Americans approached Butler and asked him to lead the coup. However, as a patriotic US Marine officer he went public and stopped the coup before it could happen.
Did anybody go to jail, of course not… it’s only illegal if YOU do it.

There are also events that happened at sea during the African slave trade era. Some slaves managed to break free and take over the entire ship, that could not have been easy but, they managed it.
