The deficit was $5 trillion last year under those rules. The official number was $1.3 trillion. Liabilities for Social Security, Medicare and other retirement programs rose by $3.7 trillion in 2011, according to government actuaries, but the amount was not registered on the government’s books.

I will go out on a limb and guess that if this method of accounting was used in the Bush years that his numbers would look even grimmer, especially in terms of health care costs for veterans. I seem to recall many in the media making these sorts of comparisons but they seem to be largely silent now.
It doesn’t bother me too much that individuals will wear their political blinders and rally around the team but it bothers me to no end that the media wears them. How fun would it be to have a job where you get to skewer everyone on a daily basis and not just half the people? It surely is a sign of the decline of the journalistic work ethic.
