Space Force approves Vandenberg environmental assessment, allowing SpaceX’s to launch as much as 100 times annually

The Space Force on October 10, 2025 announced it has now finalized and approved the environmental assessment that will permit SpaceX’s to increase its launch rate at Vandenberg to as much as 100 times per year.
The DAF [Air Force] has decided to increase the annual Falcon launch cadence at VSFB [Vandenberg] through launch and landing operations at SLC-4 and SLC-6 [the two SpaceX launchpads], including modification of SLC-6 for Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launch vehicles to support future U.S. Government and commercial launch service needs. The overall launch cadence will increase from 50 Falcon 9 launches per year at SLC-4 to up to 100 launches per year for Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy at both SLCs combined. Falcon Heavy, which has not previously launched from VSFB, would launch and land up to five times per year from and at SLC-6. The DAF will authorize SpaceX to construct a new hangar south of the HIF [SpaceX’s horizontal integration facility] and north of SLC-6 to support Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy integration and processing.

SLC-4 (pronounced “slick-four”) is the pad SpaceX has been using for years to launch Falcon 9s. SLC-6 was originally built for the space shuttle but never used for that purpose. Subsequently ULA leased it to launch its Delta family of rockets. When that rocket was retired SpaceX won the lease to reconfigure the site for both Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches.
The Space Force apparently decided to ignore the objections of the California Coastal Commission as well as a number of anti-Musk leftwing activist groups. And its decision is well grounded in facts. The report documents at length the lack of any consequential environmental impacts from the increase of launches, which is further supported by almost three quarters of a century of actual use.
The decision is also well founded in basic American culture and law. The Space Force as a government agency must act as a servant of the American people, in this case represented by the private company SpaceX. It must therefore do whatever it can to aid and support that company, not put up roadblocks because it doesn’t like what the company proposes.
At least under Trump, this is the approach the Space Force is taking. I fear what will happen if a Democrat regains the presidency, based on the radical and enthused communist make-up of that party today.

Isn’t SpaceX going to need to launch thousands of V3 Starlinks into polar orbits using Starship?
A Starship launch facility at Vandy might be barely possible – and would certainly constitute a poke in the eye with a sharp stick to current and any future Democrat administrations in Sacramento – but it’s not essential. SpaceX already launches Falcons to high-inclination orbits from KSC and Canaveral. It can do the same with Starships.
The two biggest sticking points for a Starship presence at Vandy are that SpaceX, thus far, is building, or has built, Starship production facilities at its Starship launch sites. Just accommodating a Starship launch facility at Vandy would be a “footprint” challenge. There is no way a third Starfactory could be built on Vandy ground and doing so outside the wire would just invite more harassment from the Coastal Commission. And then there’s the fact that Elon would be disinclined to put anything new and large into California unless its state government reliably flips to Republican control. There is a modest possibility of a Republican taking the Governorship next year, but the Dems have supermajorities in both houses of the CA state legislature and are likely to keep such in at least one house even if we get a Republican Governor.
I talked to my friend today who does projects at Vandy about Starship. They do have the space for it south of SLC-6, it has been talked about, but they need a lot of infrastructure upgrades, and to handle all the employees of SpaceX. They are still working on fixing up SLC-6 by the way.
I agree with Dick Eagleson’s assessment of the political hostility of California towards Musk. It would not happen and I don’t think it is worth it. I can see the lawsuit costs alone would be the equivalent of two trips to Mars.

True, true. However, that would reduce the payload capacity, because there is a little more maneuvering necessary from KSC and Canaveral than from Vandenberg.

I’m not sure that it is Republican control, per se, but that California — and especially its legislature — is both anti-business and anti-Musk. Most likely a Republican controlled California would be more favorable, but there was a time when the Democrats were still in favor of business and still appreciative of Musk and SpaceX. But that was before they went insane and lost touch with reality.
