Below the fold is Tuesday’s podcast of my appearance on the John Batchelor show. In addition to discussing Falcon Heavy, Ariane 6, and the question of rocket re-usability, I also lambasted the glacially slow pace of NASA’s Orion project, producing four capsules for a mere $17 billion in only 19 years! And speaking of glaciers, I also noted in the science segment the stonewalling at NOAA that prevents scientists from analyzing the rational behind their “adjustments” to their climate data, all of which cool the past and warm the present.

I also made reference to this essay I wrote after watching Elon Musk first announce in 2011 his plans to vertically land the first stage of his Falcon 9 rocket. Took him only five years to do it.

On a caving expedition
I want to apologize for the lack of posting today and tomorrow. I am on a four day caving expedition to finish up a cave project I have been working on for the past four years. Thus, I was unable to do much posting on Thursday, though I probably will have time after tomorrow’s cave trip to catch up.

I will be doing one of my regular two hour appearances on David Livingston’s The Space Show tonight, starting at 7 pm (Pacific). We will likely spend some time talking about the election campaign in conjunction with space, along with a bunch of other topics. Should be fun.

I will be doing another two hours with Georgy Noory on Coast to Coast on Tuesday night from midnight to 2 am, providing him an update of some of the real space and science news that has occurred in the past month, since my last appearance. Tune in for some fun stuff!

A minor note of interest: Coast to Coast has decided to name me their official science adviser. This means they will be giving me more air time to talk about space, astronomy, and other issues relating to science. Should be lots of fun.
And I must say it, for every minute I am on the air talking about the really exciting discoveries in real science, it will be one less minute they can waste talking about silly stuff like UFOs and ancient civilizations on the far side of the Moon. Without doubt this can only be a gain, for them, their audience, and society in general.

For those interested, I will be doing a two hour appearance on Coast to Coast with George Noory tonight from 10 to midnight, talking about all the planetary missions going on, including New Horizons’ Pluto fly-by next week. Should be fun. Tune in if you can.

The Fifth Anniversary of Behind the Black
This week I celebrate the fifth anniversary of this website. My first post here took place on June 27, 2010, but I consider the beginning of Behind the Black to have occurred during that entire first week as I figured out how I wanted to do it.
To commemorate these past five years I am holding a fund-raiser. Please consider contributing.
Broken arm
My posts for the next week or so are going to be shorter than I would prefer. This weekend I had a minor fall during a cave trip and broke one bone in my lower left arm. We were about two hours from the entrance, so the trip out was somewhat entertaining, though it did go smoothly without any significant difficulties. taking about three hours to get back to the surface.
Nonetheless, I am a lefty, so writing is now difficult, and with the cast on my arm touch typing is a challenge as well. I can manage posts, but writing long commentaries will likely not happen for the next week or so while the arm heals or I get a smaller cast.
