It won’t be Democratic Party stupidity that will give Republicans victories in ’26 and ’28
In the past few weeks there have been a number of very entertaining essays describing the insane inability of Democrats to learn anything from their defeats in the 2024 elections. From the second link:
The Democratic Party just can’t help itself. For its own psychological reasons, it can’t move beyond the “denial” stage of grief. Doing so would jeopardize the party’s sense of purpose, identity, and ego. Right now, the “patient” cannot heal itself because it won’t accept the diagnosis.
Instead, it rejects it: Trump is Hitler! Musk is Hitler! MAGA is Hitler! I’m the only one defending democracy!
A sane, rational actor would take a step back and consider his own role in losing three branches of government, a majority of statehouses, and two-thirds of the Supreme Court. And then they’d develop a better product.
Fortunately for the GOP, they’re just not ready for that level of introspection. Not yet. (And probably not until it’s forced upon them.)
And so, the losing losers of the Democratic Party continue to lose. They can’t even counterpunch effectively, because they overreact to every feint. They’re so ridiculously undisciplined, they’re chasing shadows, following the champ around the ring like a puppy dog — eating a buffet of rights, jabs, and uppercuts. [emphasis in original]
All true, but if conservatives think this stupidity on the left will win Republicans the mid-term elections in ’26 and the next presidential election in ’28, they are fooling themselves. We must remember that though Trump won handily in November, he also did not win with that great a majority, only 49.9% to 48.3%. The victories in the battleground states were razor thin as well. Furthermore, Republican majorities in both Houses of Congress remain slim, and could easily shift leftward in the next election.
You see, as incredibly foolish the Democrats might appear in their recent actions — such as loudly protesting any audits that uncover fraud and waste in the federal government — a very large percentage of Americans still buy into their sales pitch of slander and lies. The Democrats have every reason to stick with this game plan, because it has worked in the past and almost worked in 2024.
No, what will really win the next two elections is what Trump and the Republicans do in the next four years. As Rush Limbaugh would say repeatedly, you win elections by the positive actions you do, not by the negative criticisms (no matter how justified) you throw at your opponents. As one reader wrote yesterday on Instapundit:
From some of what I see online and conversations with my lefty friends, the Dems seem to be coalescing around an innocuous-sounding theme of “Slow Down.” I.e., without debating the merits of what Trump is doing, can’t we just all agree that he’s doing it all way too quickly? This avoids any awkward debates about the merits of USAID funding transgender basket-weaving classes in Patagonia, and skips right to the real Democrat goal of just stalling Trump until we are closer to midterm elections.
If the GOP indulges this for even a second, they deserve every midterm loss they will suffer.
Keep going. Don’t slow down. Don’t even slow down to talk to the bitter losers asking you to slow down. You have at best four years of a GOP Congress and probably only two. Don’t waste time.
The fearless speed in which Trump and his administration have moved in the first three weeks since he took power has been breath-taking. It has shaken up Washington in ways that have not occurred in almost a century.
Yet it will all be for naught, as that reader above noted, if Trump and the Republicans slow down for a second. You see, the achievements of the past three weeks have not simply shaken up Washington, it is changing minds among ordinary Americans, as forceful courageous and correct actions always do. Consider the commentary below by a woman who voted for Kamala Harris, but is enthused by Trump’s actions:
SHE VOTED FOR KAMALA AND SHE'S GLAD TRUMP WON.pic.twitter.com/DIKYBmlp6j
— Citizen Free Press (@CitizenFreePres) February 7, 2025
Nor is this woman alone. The shift in the polls in just the past few weeks have been startling, to say the least. Not only have the positive numbers for Trump and the Republican Party skyrocketed, before Trump took office polls said Americans thought the country was on the wrong track 67% to 33%. Now, only three weeks later, the result is the exact opposite, 52% to 48%, with a majority now saying were on the right track. A 19% point shift in only three weeks!
Other polls confirm these numbers. A CBS News poll now gives Trump a 53% to 47% job approval rating, the highest ever while he was in office. This poll also showed that the public’s overall approval of Trump was rooted in the fact that he was doing exactly what he promised.
Another poll, asking voters which party they favored, also showed the highest positive rating for the Republican Party ever, 48% to 40%, over the Democratic Party. This number has been further confirmed by voter registration numbers coming in from numerous states (here, here, and here) showing big gains for Republicans.
You see, what will win the upcoming elections will be what the Republicans accomplish in the next four years. Though Democratic Party demagoguery might seem weak and incoherent now, if the Republicans fail to carry out their promises or falter in their effort that demagoguery might actually begin to produce results, and carry the Democrats to victory.
Americans in general don’t like weak and failed leaders, such as the Republicans of the past. Kow-tow to the Democrats in any way and Americans will once again lose faith with the Republican Party and reconsider giving Democrats their support.
The best thing Trump and the Republicans can do is to push even harder then they have in the past three weeks. Shut down numerous agencies and cabinet-level departments without mercy. Clean up the waste and fraud in the federal budget. Prosecute the criminals who abused their power to persecute innocent Americans for simply opposing the policies of Biden and the Democrats.
The truth always wins
And when the the Democrats threaten to shut down the government during budget negotiations in March, let them do it. Make it plain that Trump and the Republicans meant it when they said they wanted to drain the swamp, and are quite willing to let the Democrats help them in that task.
That forceful achievement, reshaping the federal government spectacularly in only a short time, will do more to win votes than anything else. And it will work because as they shut down huge swathes of the federal government, the public is going to quickly discover how little they needed those bureaucracies. The nation will go on. In fact, it is likely to thrive as never before.
And that will make voters flock to the Republican Party in ’26 and ’28 in numbers that no poll yet anticipates.
Readers!
My annual February birthday fund-raising drive for Behind the Black is now over. Thank you to everyone who donated or subscribed. While not a record-setter, the donations were more than sufficient and slightly above average.
As I have said many times before, I can’t express what it means to me to get such support, especially as no one is required to pay anything to read my work. Thank you all again!
For those readers who like my work here at Behind the Black and haven't contributed so far, please consider donating or subscribing. My analysis of space, politics, and culture, taken from the perspective of an historian, is almost always on the money and ahead of the game. For example, in 2020 I correctly predicted that the COVID panic was unnecessary, that the virus was apparently simply a variation of the flu, that masks were not simply pointless but if worn incorrectly were a health threat, that the lockdowns were a disaster and did nothing to stop the spread of COVID. Every one of those 2020 conclusions has turned out right.
Your help allows me to do this kind of intelligent analysis. I take no advertising or sponsors, so my reporting isn't influenced by donations by established space or drug companies. Instead, I rely entirely on donations and subscriptions from my readers, which gives me the freedom to write what I think, unencumbered by outside influences.
You can support me either by giving a one-time contribution or a regular subscription. There are four ways of doing so:
1. Zelle: This is the only internet method that charges no fees. All you have to do is use the Zelle link at your internet bank and give my name and email address (zimmerman at nasw dot org). What you donate is what I get.
2. Patreon: Go to my website there and pick one of five monthly subscription amounts, or by making a one-time donation.
3. A Paypal Donation or subscription:
4. Donate by check, payable to Robert Zimmerman and mailed to

The BIG difference at work presently is that Trump and his Cabinet have genuine support from voters. They know it, and the Democrats know it, too.
In the past, it has often been the case that the ELECTION was considered the ultimate victory, rather than the important first step toward governing that it truly is. It had been enough to simply have “our team” win.
THE TRUMP AUTHORITARIAN TAKE OVER OF AMERICA!!!
“An example of extreme politics in America that really began in earnest under the Barak Hussein Obama presidency. During the Obama presidency his Leftist handlers and insiders introduced the concept of “I have a pen” theory of presidential executive order dominance in leadership and forcing political agendas upon the people of America and the world.”
“The radical ideological Democrat zealots in leadership and in control went for the gold and have in fact accomplished the destruction of their political party by their extremism. Well, done!”

When Republicans win they are in office, when Democrats win they are in power. This is an old saying I will attribute to Mark Steyn.
So far it looks like power, but the house has to do something in order to keep the initiative and not let the lower courts let things be mired at the beachfront.
We will lose if we don’t stay on offense. This is very difficult for Republicans, traditionally, to understand. Without Trump, I’m not sure they ever would.
If Americans are so ignorant and deluded that democrats STILL can win, then we’re in the last days of Constantinople.
The walls remain but the people are lost.
If elections of all kinds continue to be stolen and rigged, all your predictions count for nothing.
Isn’t it telling though that a complete MORON like the Kamala garnered that much support? Romney was “caught” discussing the 47% that will vote DEMOcrat no matter what! It appears that either that still remains true or that the DEMOcrats found NEW ways to cheat! I have no doubt that ALL the races that were DELAYED and ended up as DEMOcrat “wins” were fraudulent!
I do hope AND PRAY that AG Bondi has some Special Counsels in mind to investigate Vote Fraud and that the REPUBLICAN Congress can enact a NATIONAL VOTER ID SYSTEM! Start NOW with compliance required by the 2028 Presidential Election!
PICTURED ID with a hologram that cannot be copied or altered! Enlist College Students to work Nationwide to get the REGISTERED Voters certified! It will be a giant task, but so is catching a gigantic rocket booster as it descends!
I think that perception is reality.
Perception will be driven by what the “media” projects to the people. It’s not (always) the truth.
Thankfully Main Stream Media is changing. We can see this by the changes in the White House press conference attendees and how badly some services/papers are doing. For the first time we are seeing streaming, podcast and alternative media (which is outstripping the previous MSM) literally getting a seat in the WH press conference.
I agree we (independent freedom loving people) must stay on the offensive. At the current rate and implied depth of the work DOGE and the other (much younger by the way) members of the Trump Cabinet are doing there will be many moments where we are aghast at what is found, including nefarious Republicans. i think we will also be aghast at what is going to be changed – including some favorite programs etc.
.
The perception that the public has will be the reality and will shape the elections and the direction in the future.
“BIG BALLS” FLYING HIGH!
“The man running this badly needed governmental high colonic has released his computer genius minions on the system and they are all young and very driven. And the Democrat party machine is in high “Crush, Kill, Destroy” mode and are intently involved in muddying up these young D.O.G.E. computer genius minions. And we all know and understand that the truth of the matter lies buried deep within these computer systems. Computers don’t forget.”
“The desperate Democrats have now made this young man world famous and have set him on a “BIG BALLS” high trajectory of success!”

It’s commentary and dialogue like this that make BTB one of my daily go-to sites. I appreciate all of you.
Let’s keep it going and growing by remembering Bob’s Birthday fundraiser. And I truly believe that if we help Bob reach his funding target/goal here, we’ll have seen the last of Cliff Richard on the Evening Pause.
Oh, the humanity!
From the linked PJ Media essay:
It isn’t just the Democrat leadership that does this. Their voters do the same thing, thinking that Trump is stupid and that Musk is crazy, despite the evidence of their own eyes. These are emotional reactions, not rational ones.
This is not a surprise. The Democrats feel as though they have the right solutions to everything, and when those solutions do now work out, then they feel that they need to apply more solution. This is what Obama did with his stimulus package, which was just amore massive increase in Keynesian Economics than had ever been tried before, resulting not in prosperity* but in the Great Recession of the 2010s. So, if they feel that theatrics, fireworks, and enraged opposition are the solutions, that is what they will continue doing, just more of them.
Robert wrote: “We must remember that though Trump won handily in November, he also did not win with that great a majority, only 49.9% to 48.3%. The victories in the battleground states were razor thin as well.”
That was the result after the cheating that the Democrat Party performed in 2024. They didn’t do it as openly as in 2020, but they did do it. Despite California taking 38 days to count votes, it does not take 38 days to count votes. But it could take that long to harvest ballots in order to change the outcome of a free and fair election — and ballot harvesting is legal in California, harvesters have one week after Election Day to turn in their harvested ballots. California was not trying to change the presidential vote, but it was trying to change the local votes and especially the representatives to the U.S. House.
“… a very large percentage of Americans still buy into their sales pitch of slander and lies. The Democrats have every reason to stick with this game plan, because it has worked in the past and almost worked in 2024.”
This is more of that emotional feelings that trump Democrats’ rationality. As Jonathan Gruber said, the Democrat Party relies upon the stupidity of the American voter, and since they don’t rely upon Republican or Conservative voters, they must only rely upon the other voters — whom they think are stupid enough to continue their emotional feelings, specifically the feelings that they must continue voting Democratic.
“Consider the commentary below by a woman who voted for Kamala Harris, but is enthused by Trump’s actions:”
She is still emotional: “I regret voting for Kamala. … has really put something on my heart … I’m glad of the results … ”
But she is now beginning to talk about being thoughtful and rational instead: “I don’t know what I was thinking, going in there and voting for Kamala in the first place … Do your research …”

* Zero percent interest rates should have brought us the biggest economic boom ever, and quantitative easing should have created an unhealthy boom to the economy, but they didn’t because Keynesian Economics cannot work, as it removes the very money from the economy that it relies upon to stimulate the economy. Keynesian Economics is also called demand-side economics, which is supposed to stimulate an economy by increasing the demand and encouraging companies to expand in order to meet that demand. However, increased demand results in increased prices (which should be encouraging businesses to expand) but the increased taxes to hand out to the populace to spend only removes discretionary spending money from the populace, negating the increase in demand; or government borrowing increases the interest rates, making it too expensive for businesses to expand and meet the increased demand; or the government printing money results in inflation and the inability for anyone to afford the goods and services that were going to save the economy.
Reaganomics (supply-side economics) reduced the government costs to doing business (e.g. taxes and costly regulations), resulting in businesses reducing prices, resulting in more people buying products and increasing demand, which the companies were able to afford to supply by expanding, which employed more people who also increased the demand. This worked so well that it took Bush and Clinton a dozen years to cause a recession.
Supply-side economics was what brought about the Roaring Twenties, a century ago. The Great Depression followed in the U.S., the following decade, because the U.S. government tried to intervene in a small downturn and created a huge economic depression. The rest of the world did not have a 1930s depression worth talking about, because those governments let their economies sort themselves out.
