California bills man for rescuing family
Fascist California: A man pulls a family trapped in an overturned car and the local authorities in California then bill him $143 for doing their work.
It makes no sense, and neither does the explanation offered by those authorities.
Cosumnes Deputy Chief Mike McLaughlin tells CBS Sacramento that, though DeAnda’s situation is unique, issuing first-responder bills is just standard practice for his district. “We’re obligated to provide the same level of service, the same billing, the same everything — for every patient we encounter,” he said.
What a crock. They are simply incompetent, and probably mistakenly recorded the man as one of the victims, and then charged them all for work the man did.
Readers!
Every February I run a fund-raising drive during my birthday month. This year I celebrate my 72nd birthday, and hope and plan to continue writing and posting on Behind the Black for as long as I am able.
I hope my readers will support this effort. As I did in my November fund-raising drive, I am offering autographed copies of my books for large donations. Donate $250 and you can have a choice of the hardback of either Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8 or Conscious Choice: The origins of slavery in America and why it matters today and for our future in outer space. Donate $200 and you can get an autographed paperback copy of either. IMPORTANT! If you donate enough to get a book, please email me separately to tell me which book you want and the address to mail it to.
Please consider supporting my work here at Behind the Black. My analysis of space, politics, and culture, taken from the perspective of an historian, is almost always on the money and ahead of the game. For example, in 2020 I correctly predicted that the COVID panic was unnecessary, that the virus was apparently simply a variation of the flu, that masks were not simply pointless but if worn incorrectly were a health threat, that the lockdowns were a disaster and did nothing to stop the spread of COVID. Every one of those 2020 conclusions has turned out right.
Your help allows me to do this kind of intelligent analysis. I take no advertising or sponsors, so my reporting isn't influenced by donations by established space or drug companies. Instead, I rely entirely on donations and subscriptions from my readers, which gives me the freedom to write what I think, unencumbered by outside influences.
You can support me either by giving a one-time contribution or a regular subscription. There are four ways of doing so:
1. Zelle: This is the only internet method that charges no fees. All you have to do is use the Zelle link at your internet bank and give my name and email address (zimmerman at nasw dot org). What you donate is what I get.
2. Patreon: Go to my website there and pick one of five monthly subscription amounts, or by making a one-time donation.
3. A Paypal Donation or subscription:
4. Donate by check, payable to Robert Zimmerman and mailed to

Thank goodness I do not live in Elk Grove. In the past 1-1/2 years, I have witnessed three auto accidents and have stayed to help and give a report to the police for all three cases. Next time I drive through the Elk Grove area (wherever that is — Oh, Google shows it south of Sacramento), I will not stop for any accidents — or run away as soon as a first responder approaches. I don’t know if the appeals process (guilt until proved innocent?) requires my presence, but that would be just too much.
Come to think of it, running away may suggest guilt to the first responders and the eventual adjudicator. Better to not stop at all. Good luck, future Elk Grove accident victims.
Do you remember when New York citizens had a reputation for not getting involved?
It probably went something like this,
“Sir, are you OK?”
“Ya, I’m fine. It was these other people that were in the accident.”
“Well, let’s get you checked out anyway just to be safe.”
“OK.”
Then a month later the bill shows up. Had they told the man upfront they were going to charge him $143 for checking his blood pressure and shining a flashlight in his eyes, he probably would have declined their treatment.
I think your guess that they mistook him for one of the accident victims is correct. It’s stupid bureaucracy but hardly fascism.
I also agree with Wodun’s probable scenario.
It would be classy if the victim family offers to foot the bill.
Sorry for an off-topic comment, but I found these photos of the remaining Soviet era Buran shuttles fascinating and I thought others would as well. Are these recent photos? I thought the shuttles were destroyed when a build collapsed. Regardless, it’s a shame they came to this sad state.
Wodun has it right.
The guy I bought my house from was killed in a car accident shortly after we closed. For the next 2 years we regularly received “official looking” mail addressed to him from the County–I paid no attention & “returned to sender.”
It wouldn’t stop however, so I opened up one of the Notice’s; he was being billed $400 for “accident clean-up & towing,” and in addition, he received two traffic-tickets ($350), for the accident which killed him. (he died at the scene, not sure how the Police wrote him 2 tickets.)
mpthompson: interesting article and picture!
No good deed goes unpunished!
mpthompson,
The Buran space shuttle was destroyed when it’s building’s roof collapsed.
This page has links to some photographs:

Although Buran only flew once — and that was unmanned — it was a part of space history, and it is a shame to have lost it.
