The FEC’s Office of Inspector General sought to conduct a criminal investigation into Sands’ activities but were stymied when they found that the agency had recycled her computer hard drive. “Therefore the OIG was unable to show that Ms. Sands’ solicitations and political activity were done from an FEC computer,” reads the letter. Because of this, the U.S. attorney’s office for the District of Columbia declined criminal prosecution. “The FEC’s failure to retain Ms. Sands’ hard drive prevented the FEC OIG from fully pursuing appropriate criminal sanctions for Ms. Sands’ admitted violation of federal law,” wrote Issa and Jordan.
Sands was under investigation for using her position in the government for partisan purposes. In other words, though she was being paid to work for the Federal Election Commission, she was actually working illegally for the Democratic Party instead.

Here’s a thought. Get rid of the FEC and eliminate public financing of political activity at the Federal level.
I would keep the FEC.
For the most part and for most of its time its has been a non partisan office doing a pretty good job of upholding election laws and rules.
Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater as they say.
What can be done is we could give someone the power of a real prosecutor and criminal court.
In ANY other criminal case the destruction of evidence is looked on as evidence of guilt and anyone caught doing it can face prosecution. Along with the defendant.
Just look at the Boston bomber case. His collage buddies are presently going to court and face years in real jail for destroying and or hiding his possessions from his apartment. Something they did after they found out it was him and his brother doing the bombing.
Send a few low level desk jocky’s to jail and all the rest will fall in line. No more “accidental” loss of data.
