Readers! A November fund-raising drive!

It is unfortunately time for another November fund-raising campaign to support my work here at Behind the Black. I really dislike doing these, but 2025 is so far turning out to be a very poor year for donations and subscriptions, the worst since 2020. I very much need your support for this webpage to survive.

And I think I provide real value. Fifteen years ago I said SLS was garbage and should be cancelled. Almost a decade ago I said Orion was a lie and a bad idea. As early as 1998, long before almost anyone else, I predicted in my first book, Genesis: The Story of Apollo 8, that private enterprise and freedom would conquer the solar system, not government. Very early in the COVID panic and continuing throughout I noted that every policy put forth by the government (masks, social distancing, lockdowns, jab mandates) was wrong, misguided, and did more harm than good. In planetary science, while everyone else in the media still thinks Mars has no water, I have been reporting the real results from the orbiters now for more than five years, that Mars is in fact a planet largely covered with ice.

I could continue with numerous other examples. If you want to know what others will discover a decade hence, read what I write here at Behind the Black. And if you read my most recent book, Conscious Choice, you will find out what is going to happen in space in the next century.

This last claim might sound like hubris on my part, but I base it on my overall track record.

So please consider donating or subscribing to Behind the Black, either by giving a one-time contribution or a regular subscription. I could really use the support at this time. There are five ways of doing so:

1. Zelle: This is the only internet method that charges no fees. All you have to do is use the Zelle link at your internet bank and give my name and email address (zimmerman at nasw dot org). What you donate is what I get.

2. Patreon: Go to my website there and pick one of five monthly subscription amounts, or by making a one-time donation. Takes about a 10% cut.

3. A Paypal Donation or subscription, which takes about a 15% cut:

4. Donate by check. I get whatever you donate. Make the check payable to Robert Zimmerman and mail it to

Masks = virtue signaling

This essay by Robert Pratt about the uselessness of masks to stop or slow the spread of COVID-19 has this very clarifying quote:

“When a person is infectious with a virus it is estimated that they may shed one hundred billion virus particles a day – that works out to 10 million per breath,” [Dr. John Lee, a former professor of pathology at a UK medical school] pointed out.

Given that the most common cloth masks in use by people have thousands of pores, holes between the fabric threads, several times larger than the width of a human hair and that a full thousand virus particles can fit through a space the size of a human hair side-by-side even laboratory controlled fit and use of a mask, conditions not present in actual life usage, does little to stop the spread of virus particles.

…If just a breath contains 10 million virus particles, the pressurized large release associated with a sneeze or cough is reasonably likely to be much greater and will put millions of virus particles straight through a mask as well as much more out the side perimeters of such.

So let’s summarize: The mask, worn for long periods, forces you to rebreath your carbon dioxide at higher levels than normal, lowers the oxygen content to levels that are considered unhealthy, and in the end can do little to block the virus. On top of this, if you unconsciously touch the front of your mask (such as to pull it down to talk to someone), and your hand had not been sanitized just beforehand, you have just taken the risk of placing the virus on the mask, at exactly the place you breath.

Sounds like a plan to me, eh?

Genesis cover

On Christmas Eve 1968 three Americans became the first humans to visit another world. What they did to celebrate was unexpected and profound, and will be remembered throughout all human history. Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8, Robert Zimmerman's classic history of humanity's first journey to another world, tells that story, and it is now available as both an ebook and an audiobook, both with a foreword by Valerie Anders and a new introduction by Robert Zimmerman.

The print edition can be purchased at Amazon or from any other book seller. If you want an autographed copy the price is $60 for the hardback and $45 for the paperback, plus $8 shipping for each. Go here for purchasing details. The ebook is available everywhere for $5.99 (before discount) at amazon, or direct from my ebook publisher, ebookit. If you buy it from ebookit you don't support the big tech companies and the author gets a bigger cut much sooner.

The audiobook is also available at all these vendors, and is also free with a 30-day trial membership to Audible.

"Not simply about one mission, [Genesis] is also the history of America's quest for the moon... Zimmerman has done a masterful job of tying disparate events together into a solid account of one of America's greatest human triumphs."--San Antonio Express-News

Washington state Governor Jay Inslee made face coverings mandatory in public in the entire state, both indoors and outdoors, effective Friday, June 26.

It’s not about safety because any covering is acceptable. You could put a woman’s nylon over your head, bank-robber style, and it would meet his requirements. Inslee said, “Any covering that will cover the nose and mouth will do in this case. What you choose is your choice. We’re just appreciative if everyone could think of this as the new part of etiquette in our state.”

and the bonus that the human lower mouth area (that comprises the majority of human emotion/feelings signalling) is hidden. long live human isolation.

The need to belong is a powerful motivator to the weak minded.

They have masks, and no one is going to take them away.

Actually, I went to the bank the other day to make a withdrawal while wearing a mask. When I got to the cashier’s window I was greeted by name. So much for a promising career as a bank robber.

    A little more virtue signaling:

    This definition seems to fit:

Idiot: “An idiot, in modern use, is a stupid or foolish person. It was formerly a technical term in legal and psychiatric contexts for some kinds of profound intellectual disability where the mental age is two years or less, and the person cannot guard himself or herself against common physical dangers. The term was gradually replaced by the term profound mental retardation. Along with terms like moron, imbecile, and cretin, it is archaic and offensive in those uses.”

Comedy is dead because these people say so?

    Comedy dies years ago.

A little after Blazing Saddles was when I noticed its coming death.

DougSpace, that article is backed by junk. Comparing droplet blockage from speaking with nothing vs. covering with a damp washcloth (A highly effective filter, but impossible to breathe through) proves nothing, and the influenza study cited is very specific to surgical and hospital settings.

People don’t wash their hands prior to touching their masks every time, and fail to practice proper donning and doffing, eliminating the efficacy of masks. The “studies” of various countries and mask usage are exceedingly poor science, as there is no one factor that is compared, as you’re discussing societal actions overall vs. one change.

They are a virtue signal, nothing more.

And lets not forget that sports is also dead:

“On Saturday, it was reported that players will be able to include social justice messages on the backs of their jerseys at Disney. That decision, while powerful, puts the onus on players. The league itself needed to send a message of solidarity, and is doing so with its latest decision. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Zach Lowe and Ramona Shelburne, the league plans to paint “Black Lives Matter” on both sidelines on all three of the courts they will be using at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. “

And here we are nearly a year later- sheeple still wearing their virtue signal even though most have been vaxxd or had the virus. I decided about a month ago to take that step and STOP wearing one unless I’m in a medical space or airport/plane. Most days I’m the only one in a store unmasked and I’m sure I’m viewed as a Neanderthal. Whatever. One of these days people will know the truth and that they’ve been LIED TO.
