Readers! A November fund-raising drive!

It is unfortunately time for another November fund-raising campaign to support my work here at Behind the Black. I really dislike doing these, but 2025 is so far turning out to be a very poor year for donations and subscriptions, the worst since 2020. I very much need your support for this webpage to survive.

And I think I provide real value. Fifteen years ago I said SLS was garbage and should be cancelled. Almost a decade ago I said Orion was a lie and a bad idea. As early as 1998, long before almost anyone else, I predicted in my first book, Genesis: The Story of Apollo 8, that private enterprise and freedom would conquer the solar system, not government. Very early in the COVID panic and continuing throughout I noted that every policy put forth by the government (masks, social distancing, lockdowns, jab mandates) was wrong, misguided, and did more harm than good. In planetary science, while everyone else in the media still thinks Mars has no water, I have been reporting the real results from the orbiters now for more than five years, that Mars is in fact a planet largely covered with ice.

I could continue with numerous other examples. If you want to know what others will discover a decade hence, read what I write here at Behind the Black. And if you read my most recent book, Conscious Choice, you will find out what is going to happen in space in the next century.

This last claim might sound like hubris on my part, but I base it on my overall track record.

So please consider donating or subscribing to Behind the Black, either by giving a one-time contribution or a regular subscription. I could really use the support at this time. There are five ways of doing so:

1. Zelle: This is the only internet method that charges no fees. All you have to do is use the Zelle link at your internet bank and give my name and email address (zimmerman at nasw dot org). What you donate is what I get.

2. Patreon: Go to my website there and pick one of five monthly subscription amounts, or by making a one-time donation. Takes about a 10% cut.

3. A Paypal Donation or subscription, which takes about a 15% cut:

4. Donate by check. I get whatever you donate. Make the check payable to Robert Zimmerman and mail it to

Computer simulations prove that we can geoengineer the climate!

What could possibly go wrong? Global warming scientists have discovered, using computer simulations, that combining several different geoengineering techniques, what they call a “cocktail,” will save the planet and do no harm.

The team—which includes Carnegie’s Ken Caldeira, Long Cao and Lei Duan of Zhejiang University, and Govindasamy Bala of the Indian Institute of Science—used models to simulate what would happen if sunlight were scattered by particles at the same time as the cirrus clouds were thinned. They wanted to understand how effective this combined set of tools would be at reversing climate change, both globally and regionally. “As far as I know, this is the first study to try to model using two different geoengineering approaches simultaneously to try to improve the overall fit of the technology,” Caldeira explained.

The good news is that their simulations showed that if both methods are deployed in concert, it would decrease warming to pre-industrial levels, as desired, and on a global level rainfall would also stay at pre-industrial levels. But the bad news is that while global average climate was largely restored, substantial differences remained locally, with some areas getting much wetter and other areas getting much drier.

And if you believe that this simulation captures what will really happen should global warming scientists dump vast amounts of light-reflecting particles in the upper atmosphere while also adding chemicals to thin cirrus clouds, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell you. We don’t even really know if the climate is warming as these political activists (they are not really scientists) claim. We don’t really understand how the climate actually works. We don’t even understand fully how the Sun really fluctuates, and it is without doubt the climate’s most important influence. And these guys claim they now know what will happen if we play god with the atmosphere? Give me a break.

Genesis cover

On Christmas Eve 1968 three Americans became the first humans to visit another world. What they did to celebrate was unexpected and profound, and will be remembered throughout all human history. Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8, Robert Zimmerman's classic history of humanity's first journey to another world, tells that story, and it is now available as both an ebook and an audiobook, both with a foreword by Valerie Anders and a new introduction by Robert Zimmerman.

The print edition can be purchased at Amazon or from any other book seller. If you want an autographed copy the price is $60 for the hardback and $45 for the paperback, plus $8 shipping for each. Go here for purchasing details. The ebook is available everywhere for $5.99 (before discount) at amazon, or direct from my ebook publisher, ebookit. If you buy it from ebookit you don't support the big tech companies and the author gets a bigger cut much sooner.

The audiobook is also available at all these vendors, and is also free with a 30-day trial membership to Audible.

"Not simply about one mission, [Genesis] is also the history of America's quest for the moon... Zimmerman has done a masterful job of tying disparate events together into a solid account of one of America's greatest human triumphs."--San Antonio Express-News

I’m no scientist, either — I was a science journalist who frequently covered climate science. But everything I learned during that time strongly suggests that cooling — not warming — is a far greater danger to humanity. And if somehow these individuals would manage to enact their geoengineering scheme, and as a result brought on the next ice age — which is due at any time now — thousands of future, miserable, suffering generations would curse their names.

How do they propose to deploy this climate band aide?

Q: How much reflection of solar energy is the result of commercial aircraft exhaust / contrails world wide? Is this contained within their calculations?

Those people aren’t scientists either, they are political eco-warrior’s. (Ken Caldeira, Long Cao, Lei Duan, and Govindasamy Bala.)
    It’s all Fake Science.
If they told me the sky was blue, I’d wonder what scam they were pulling.

    Cotour–
I suspect it involves US transferring billions of dollars in resources, to THEM. It’s for our own good of course, and they are better than us ordinary proles. We should bow down & scrape to them on our knees, and thank them for saving us all with their brilliant wonderfulness.

Just as utterly absurd, but without the force of law the mastermind’s above would inevitably impose on us all.

I don’t buy the speculation that warming is necessarily bad.

How will they adjust the data when their weather manipulations fail, just like their other climate models?

To twist an old Bloom County story arc, I propose we create a massive artificial sunshade composed entirely of dollar bills and place it in geosynchronous orbit. To test the concept will take billions of dollars raised in taxes in the US, but hey, it’s the climate, and bankrupting the US economy is a trifle compared to the importance of testing pseudoscience.

From the article: “They wanted to understand how effective this combined set of tools would be at reversing climate change, both globally and regionally.

So, let’s assume that these guys are correct and they can control the climate. What climate is the correct one, and who chooses?

Do we insist upon today’s climate, or the climate of 1992 (per the Kyoto Accords and is a climate many of us remember)? Do we want the climate of 1990 (per recent California emission law) or the climate of 1974 (when TIME magazine reported the coming of the next ice age)? How about the climate of the mid 19th century (before the recent Hockey Stick warming began) or the climate of the mid 17th century (the midst of the Little Ice Age, when London would occasionally have their River Thames Frost Fairs)? Maybe we want the climate of 1000 AD or of 1 AD. What about choosing the more normal planetary temperature of the glacial periods of the current ongoing ice age? The current high temperatures are not the normal for the past few million years, so perhaps we should be choosing cooler planetary temperatures to guarantee large glaciers and ice caps.

Now that we have this (faux) capability, we need to figure out just what we will do with it.

Reading this story and these posts I realized what the actual real threat to the existence of life on earth or, “The Sixth Extinction” will turn out to be. Man attempting to “fix” the climate.
