Modern academia: “We aren’t going to hire another white guy, are we?”
Whites need not apply.
The quote in the headline above comes from a lawsuit [pdf] filed by a former professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago, Stephen Kleinschmit, who was eventually terminated because he had raised concerns within his department about its hiring practices, which beginning in 2019 became entirely focused on choosing its new faculty employees solely on whether they were born to the correct race, not on their talents or qualifications.
Kleinschmit raised his concerns because he was required to participate in the hiring process, and feared if he did not do so it “would make him a participant in illegal activities for which he would be held liable.” Instead of recognizing the clearly discriminatory and illegal nature of its racial hiring practices, however, the department decided to terminate Kleinshcmit’s contract instead.
He was ultimately terminated in August 2023 spring semester, ostensibly as a result of the need for “budget cuts.” Kleinschmit said the decision to fire him at that time appeared to be intentional, to not only cut him loose from his job at UIC, but also deny him the opportunity to seek employment at another university for more than a year.
However, Kleinschmit said he – the department’s only white male faculty member – was the only faculty member terminated at that time, despite claims of lack of finances, even as UIC moved forward with plans to hire more “diverse” faculty.
The complaint noted that Kleinschmit’s old job was later posted as eligible for hiring. But now the job ad was written in a way to encourage non-white male applicants, “as UIC shifted resources to a new job focused on fulfilling its racially discriminatory goals.” [emphasis mine]
In other words, the department fired its only white professor in order to replace him with a minority.
I hope Kleinschmit wins his lawsuit. It is obvious that this university is breaking practically every civil rights law on the books, and has essentially created its own form of apartheid, where whites are banned merely because of their race.
Fighting back
Kleinschmit’s lawsuit is thankfully only one of many that has appeared in the past three years, as people who were fired or blacklisted under the illegal racial quotas created by Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs are beginning to find lawyers and fight back. In this case Kleinschmit’s lawyers come from the Liberty Justice Center, one of the many non-profit legal firms that have popped up in the past decade to defend free speech and the basic rights of Americans from illegal discrimination, blacklisting, and censorship.
Back in 2022 I compiled a list of these non-profits, and then updated it in February 2023. The Liberty Justice Center is one of eighteen legal firms listed in that 2023 update, all dedicated in some way to defending individuals like Kleinschmit. These firms have also been instrumental in defending many religious and political organizations that were oppressed by these same DEI policies in recent years.
I think it important in conclusion to quote at length that update’s summary:
—————————
If any of my readers know of other non-profit law firms that are defending freedom in similar ways, please provide that information in the comments below. I will make sure to include them in future updates, as this list is certain to grow in the coming years, as the rise of today’s illegal blacklist culture makes the need for such legal firms a growth industry.
That growth also tells us that Americans are increasingly willing to fight, and fight hard, for their rights. The bullies who decided since 2020 that those rights no longer existed are only beginning to find out the cost of that arrogance. These law firms, combined with the courage of many Americans, can make that cost high in the coming years.
“Fight! Fight! FIGHT!”
I will say it again: Americans have got to stop running and begin fighting. The reason the blacklist culture of the left has been so fearless in its oppression in the past few years is because it has not been challenged much by ordinary Americans. Too often Americans have looked the other way — out of fear or apathy — when these thugs moved in to destroy someone less.
This fear and apathy must end. If you are involved in a situation that might be applicable to any of the goals of any of these law firms, don’t sit home, do nothing, and accept defeat. Let them know. Because these freedoms are so thoroughly enshrined in American jurisprudence, the odds of winning in court is very very high.
But you can’t win if you don’t fight. It is time to fight, at all levels.
Readers!
Every February I run a fund-raising drive during my birthday month. This year I celebrate my 72nd birthday, and hope and plan to continue writing and posting on Behind the Black for as long as I am able.
I hope my readers will support this effort. As I did in my November fund-raising drive, I am offering autographed copies of my books for large donations. Donate $250 and you can have a choice of the hardback of either Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8 or Conscious Choice: The origins of slavery in America and why it matters today and for our future in outer space. Donate $200 and you can get an autographed paperback copy of either. IMPORTANT! If you donate enough to get a book, please email me separately to tell me which book you want and the address to mail it to.
Please consider supporting my work here at Behind the Black. My analysis of space, politics, and culture, taken from the perspective of an historian, is almost always on the money and ahead of the game. For example, in 2020 I correctly predicted that the COVID panic was unnecessary, that the virus was apparently simply a variation of the flu, that masks were not simply pointless but if worn incorrectly were a health threat, that the lockdowns were a disaster and did nothing to stop the spread of COVID. Every one of those 2020 conclusions has turned out right.
Your help allows me to do this kind of intelligent analysis. I take no advertising or sponsors, so my reporting isn't influenced by donations by established space or drug companies. Instead, I rely entirely on donations and subscriptions from my readers, which gives me the freedom to write what I think, unencumbered by outside influences.
You can support me either by giving a one-time contribution or a regular subscription. There are four ways of doing so:
1. Zelle: This is the only internet method that charges no fees. All you have to do is use the Zelle link at your internet bank and give my name and email address (zimmerman at nasw dot org). What you donate is what I get.
2. Patreon: Go to my website there and pick one of five monthly subscription amounts, or by making a one-time donation.
3. A Paypal Donation or subscription:
4. Donate by check, payable to Robert Zimmerman and mailed to

Problem is, with the Supremes not being favorable to EEOC (often a target) and with at-will clauses being popular–what legal recourse does he have?
Remember, conservatives were real big on “loser pays” back before de-banking.
Either libertarians acknowledge that there is indeed a role in government to quash such wrongdoing, or quit complaining–so, what will it be?
And that racist and biased philosophy and practice has resulted in the Democrat party and associates destroying their political party and the institutions that adhere to them.
And it does not appear that they have received, or they refuse to read the memo on the success of their failed policies and beliefs.
And that being so I propose the 2028 Democrat party presidential ticket: Kamala Harris for president, and AOC as vice president.
I strongly supported the Kamala Harris for president campaign in 2024. And I now strongly support the Kamala / AOC campaign in 2028.
The “FIRST” all woman all minority presidential campaign! Cannot lose!
That is all the Democrat party actually represents and proposes, the “FIRST” this and the “FIRST” that. You know, other than the absolute destruction of the country as formulated that is.
I’m sure the homes of Chancellor Marie Lynn Miranda and President Timothy L. Killeen can be found so as we can inform them of our unhappiness….
