How the tea party cornered John Boehner on immigration.
How the tea party cornered John Boehner on immigration.
The issue here for me isn’t immigration reform, but how this story describes the changing of the guard in the Republican Party. The present leadership is out of touch with its membership, on a number of issues, including Obamacare, government regulation, the budget, and the federal debt. It is only a matter of time before that leadership goes away, and from this article, it will likely be sooner rather than later.
On Christmas Eve 1968 three Americans became the first humans to visit another world. What they did to celebrate was unexpected and profound, and will be remembered throughout all human history. Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8, Robert Zimmerman's classic history of humanity's first journey to another world, tells that story, and it is now available as both an ebook and an audiobook, both with a foreword by Valerie Anders and a new introduction by Robert Zimmerman.
The ebook is available everywhere for $5.99 (before discount) at amazon, or direct from my ebook publisher, ebookit. If you buy it from ebookit you don't support the big tech companies and the author gets a bigger cut much sooner.
The audiobook is also available at all these vendors, and is also free with a 30-day trial membership to Audible.
"Not simply about one mission, [Genesis] is also the history of America's quest for the moon... Zimmerman has done a masterful job of tying disparate events together into a solid account of one of America's greatest human triumphs."--San Antonio Express-News

I am utterly perplexed as to why the GOP leadership would want to give any attention to immigration this year. It is not on the voters minds, it is a lightning rod issue that is more likely to keep the GOP base home in November, and if passed, it will ultimately give the Democrats a permanent majority. When you are the minority party in Washington, you focus on winning the next election, not on pissing off 80% of your supporters.
But then again, this is the GOP leadership we’re talking about. They don’t call it “the stupid party” for nothing.
For the life of me I cannot fathom why the republicans are even considering immigration reform (amnesty). The only acceptable/logical explanation ever given is that they are attempting to court the hispanic vote, but this would be the action of fools as the hispanic presidential vote has historically been a landslide for the democrat candidate regardless of who was eventually victorious. After amnesty in the 80s Ronald Reagan and Bush 41 still lost the hispanic vote by about 30 points. Bob Dole by over 50! John McCain and Romney same story. The best any republican has done was George Dubbya Bush in his second campaign and he still lost among hispanics by almost 20 points! I’m sure they are well aware of these facts. The only thing they will accomplish is to alienate their base again and we know how well that worked out for them in 2012. Perhaps Potomac fever has made them incurably delusional…
