Readers!

The time has come for my annual short Thanksgiving/Christmas fund drive for Behind The Black. I must do this every year in order to make sure I have earned enough money to pay my bills.

For this two-week campaign, I am offering a special deal to encourage donations. Donations of $200 will get a free autographed copy of the new paperback edition of Genesis: The Story of Apollo 8, while donations of $250 will get a free autographed copy of the new hardback edition. If you desire a copy, make sure you provide me your address with your donation.

As I noted in July, the support of my readers through the years has given me the freedom and ability to analyze objectively the ongoing renaissance in space, as well as the cultural changes -- for good or ill -- that are happening across America. Fourteen years ago I wrote that SLS and Orion were a bad ideas, a waste of money, would be years behind schedule, and better replaced by commercial private enterprise. Only now does it appear that Washington might finally recognize this reality.

In 2020 when the world panicked over COVID I wrote that the panic was unnecessary, that the virus was apparently simply a variation of the flu, that masks were not simply pointless but if worn incorrectly were a health threat, that the lockdowns were a disaster and did nothing to stop the spread of COVID. Only in the past year have some of our so-called experts in the health field have begun to recognize these facts.

Your help allows me to do this kind of intelligent analysis. I take no advertising or sponsors, so my reporting isn't influenced by donations by established space or drug companies. Instead, I rely entirely on donations and subscriptions from my readers, which gives me the freedom to write what I think, unencumbered by outside influences.

Please consider supporting my work here at Behind the Black. You can support me either by giving a one-time contribution or a regular subscription. There are four ways of doing so:

1. Zelle: This is the only internet method that charges no fees. All you have to do is use the Zelle link at your internet bank and give my name and email address (zimmerman at nasw dot org). What you donate is what I get.

2. Patreon: Go to my website there and pick one of five monthly subscription amounts, or by making a one-time donation.

3. A Paypal Donation or subscription:

4. Donate by check, payable to Robert Zimmerman and mailed to

Sierra Club official arrested for vandalizing Brownsville public mural with anti-SpaceX graffiti

Brownsville police today arrested Rebekah Lyn Hinojosa, a Sierra Club official, for spraying anti-SpaceX graffiti on the downtown mural painted by LA artist Teddy Kelly.

Hinojosa was taken into custody for spray painting the words “gentrified stop SpaceX” on a mural in downtown Brownsville. Hinojosa is the Senior Gulf Coast Campaign Representative for the Beyond Dirty Fuels Campaign, according to the Sierra Club website.

The level of ignorance illustrated by Hinojosa is difficult to measure. First, how can she think destroying art is no worse than “dirty fuels”?

Second, her belief that gentrification is somehow evil illustrates a truly profound close-mindedness and a refusal to notice that the prosperity that SpaceX is bringing Brownsville is helping everyone, poor and rich alike. She would be hard-pressed to find anyone who lives in Brownsville unhappy with SpaceX, if she made the slightest effort to ask — which she obviously does not wish to do.

Third, it appears she assumes her a short meaningless slogan constitutes a reasoned argument that will certainly change minds. And if she is right, we are truly doomed.

Hinojosa’s act however reveals the rising level of mindless hate against SpaceX’s achievements among the wine-and-cheese Democratic Party suburban crowd, the only people who really support leftist environmental organizations like the Sierra Club. They are beginning to marshal their forces to destroy the company, and sadly, their allies in the Democratic Party now control much of the government. At a minimum, expect serious delays at Boca Chica and with Starship due to this anti-capitalism campaign.

Hat tip to Robert Pratt of Pratt on Texas for letting me know about this story.

Genesis cover

On Christmas Eve 1968 three Americans became the first humans to visit another world. What they did to celebrate was unexpected and profound, and will be remembered throughout all human history. Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8, Robert Zimmerman's classic history of humanity's first journey to another world, tells that story, and it is now available as both an ebook and an audiobook, both with a foreword by Valerie Anders and a new introduction by Robert Zimmerman.

The print edition can be purchased at Amazon. from any other book seller, or direct from my ebook publisher, ebookit. The ebook is available everywhere for $5.99 (before discount) at amazon, or direct from my ebook publisher, ebookit. If you buy it from ebookit you don't support the big tech companies and the author gets a bigger cut much sooner.

The audiobook is also available at all these vendors, and is also free with a 30-day trial membership to Audible.

"Not simply about one mission, [Genesis] is also the history of America's quest for the moon... Zimmerman has done a masterful job of tying disparate events together into a solid account of one of America's greatest human triumphs."--San Antonio Express-News

Another reason to support my walking away from the Club in the Ninties……

    Thank You!!! WOKE Dunces…..

“The level of ignorance illustrated by Hinojosa is difficult to measure.”

In her mindset, she is a heroine. Ya gotta understand that she and those like her are absolutely convinced that they and only they have knowledge of THE ONE TRUE PATH that humanity must follow. And they complain of close-minded religious fundamentalists….

  • Methinks that even SpaceX’s efforts in Florida will be stymied by the Lunatic Left. Democrats hate, really hate, success that is not dependent on Government as typified by B.O.’s “You didn’t build that.” If only Elon would contribute a few hundred million dollars to the Democrats and support their goals like Bezoa, Gates, et al., he would not have the problems from the Left he is having.

    Useful idiots:
“Unthinking proponents of socialism and/or communism.
You can usually find them swarming the internet, participating in riots to promote tolerance, attempting to think up questions for themselves to answer, or sitting in Starbucks with their friends discussing the failings of capitalism over a light frappuccino.

Useful idiots are a conglomeration of trendies, brainwashed Marxists, ex-hippies (now college professors), “quirky” wannabe-intellectuals”

Yes, I also believe this is a shakedown. Grease the right palms… because one hand washes the other. (Just so, so many open hands to fill)
Elon has dealt with bullies in his past, and doesn’t respond well to threats. As an engineer and a bean counter, at some point you do a “cost based analysis” whether it’s cheaper to “fill the hands” (who will then always put their hand out for more) Or hire a hitman at 1/1000 the cost which will take care of the problem and discourage the rest?
Turning a successful hope for the future from a brilliant team of engineers that Einstein wouldn’t understand, into a clandestine empire of henchmen with an evil billionaire genius at the lead…

I was hoping to say that was sarcasm, but then I watched a video of parents being handcuffed in school board meetings, and every day truckers (that feed the nation) being hauled away being called terrorist with their donations supporters bank accounts being confiscated….
I can’t help but wonder if the truckers put on ski masks and Black Lives Matter T-shirts and started throwing firebombs and breaking windows if the police would have joined in, and would’ve cleared the way for them.
    Nothing makes sense anymore.
    Drastic times creates drastic actions.

With over 50 Democrats not running for reelection, I get the feeling that they pushed their hand too far and America is calling their bluff. (The ship is sinking, smaller rats are running away)
We are not acting the way the models predicted. America is far more tolerant then they could’ve believed.
If you have been listening to National public radio lately, they’ve been calling for a Civil War (not an insurrection or revolution)
The keyword most frequently used is violence!
    To be conservative as violence.
    To be white is violence.
To not have a vaccination is violence.
    To disagree is violence.
To burn or use carbon is violence.
To be on Social Security is violence.
To look your fellow human in the eye is violence.
If you do not cover your face is violence.
To be at the wrong place at the wrong time is an act of violence.

How do you stop the violent people who pretend they are still free?… With violence of course.
Declare a national emergency because dictators know what’s best for us. They’re not afraid to break a few eggs to get the omelette cooked. They will get things done!

““Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples saying “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.”

BillB – you are 1000% correct! Dems are indeed mentally ill! I don’t mean the normal democrat who votes democrat because his Great, Great Grandfather did and he’s too STUPID to see the TRUTH, but these democrat activists! They basically loathe themselves, blame all THEIR failures on others, DESPISE anyone who is INDEPENDENTLY successful, and see themselves as SELF RIGHTEOUS crusaders! I have no idea how much damage to the mural will cost to repair, but the “woman” (Hard to actually call a democrat Rebekah as a woman and not knowing her/his/they/it’s original design) should be made to clean off all that was defaced and then PAY for the artist to recreate. And THEN she should be sentenced to Community Service and made to STAND GUARD to make sure no more of her ilk repeat HER CRIME! I would think a sign around her neck like “I’m guarding this wonderful mural so that no OTHER IDIOT like ME vandalizes it” would be appropriate!

  • Jeff Wright

A can of spray paint wasn’t her pollution? It too was filled with gases, chemicals

  • The graffiti was actually below the mural. It didn’t deface the art itself. She was arrested and handcuffed in her pajamas, held for 24 hours and released on $1,500 bond for a Class B misdemeanor. For an act that police usually issue a summons for.

It seems like the sort of police overreach that is regularly condemned here.

    https://www.texasobserver.org/brownsville-cops-arrest-activist-for-anti-spacex-graffiti-mayor-posts-her-info-on-facebook/

  • I realize that D. Messier suffers from limited information given his source is the Leftwing Texas Observer so I will help by pointing out that in Texas we do not have a “summons” system but law enforcement may engage in “cite and release” for Class B misdemeanor graffiti charges.

However, to do so a given county and/or municipality must have established a specific cite-and-release policy for the class of crime. Because neither Brownsville or Cameron County have ever established such policy for graffiti (apparently there haven’t been that many Sierra Club employees with spray paint running around the Rio Grande Valley) the police must arrest a person once charged with graffiti (Class B) and book them in jail. (Even the liberal Houston Chronicle got this right in coverage of the story.)

Also, was it not best to pick her up at home as opposed to at a pubic place or her place of work? Had that been done the Leftists would be screaming that it was done to publicly humiliate her or cause her to lose her job. The other actions involved such as the mayor sharing her mugshot are political but no less political (as in free expression) than what she is daily engaged in.

  • D. Messier

So they don’t have a specific cite-and-release policy for graffiti, which seems odd (there must be other people with spray paint running around the Rio Grande Valley tagging buildings). So, they need to send four police officers to arrest one person, transport her to the police station, book her, keep her there for 24 hours, and release her on a $1,500 bond.

Doesn’t seem to be a very efficient use of public money. Seems like having a policy would help. It would save a lot of resources and free up police to focus on other more important and serious matters.

  • D. Messier observed: “Seems like having a policy would help. It would save a lot of resources and free up police to focus on other more important and serious matters.”

Well, homeslice, why not have a look around where you live, and influence the situation?

Robert Pratt makes valid points, and alludes to what civilians (myself, and most here on the forum) don’t see: law enforcement has to deal with what appears to be a three-headed monster: what the public expects, what the politicians require, and what the law will allow: and not a little bit more.

  • D. Messier

It’s hard to believe the same people who think this sort of treatment by the police for a simple act of grafitti is fine while defending to the death the violent mob that attacked the Capitol. But I shouldn’t expect consistency here.

  • sippin_bourbon

    Hey its Mr Messier.
All done with your cut and paste site for the day?

She committed a crime. She got arrested. What is the issue?

    Quit trying to deflect.

  • D. Messier

Wow, I hit a nerve here. Been called names (homeslice) and insulted by a bourbon guy. No actual arguments.

Proved my point. My work is done.

  • Edward

    D. Messier,
    You wrote: “No actual arguments.

What do you mean? In your second comment, you discussed Robert Pratt’s actual argument.

    Been called names (homeslice)

I do not think it means what you think it means.

A very close friend whom you have known for a long time.

Since you have been commenting here for a while, and since many of us read your articles, some of us may think of you as more of a friend than perhaps you think of us.

defending to the death the violent mob that attacked the Capitol.

Robert is critical of the violent ones in that mob, but as noted in his link associated with the bad actors, the violent ones and the ones who started the attack were not arrested or were released without charges. Rather than putting on trial the violent ones and the instigators, they put on trial the peaceful ones that the Capitol police themselves had invited and escorted into the building — as though the police had intended to entrap them and had planted and used the violent instigators in order to do it.

You have gotten your facts wrong, which may be why “a bourbon guy” so easily made you feel insulted. You may want to do better with you facts in the future, as your reputation on your news site may suffer, too.

Proved my point. My work is done.

Are you telling us that you are a troll? You really are trying to deflect? That you comment here not to join in the discussion but so you can claim that we provided no arguments (despite you having responded to them) and then claim to have been called names when you weren’t?

Doesn’t that sound like the accusers for another of Robert’s posts?

No nerve hit. Not sure what your point is.

Deflection is not an argument on your behalf.
