January 19, 2024 Quick space links

- Next Cygnus cargo capsule now intergrated with its service module
To be launched on a Falcon 9, scheduled for January 29, 2024.
- LeoLabs gets contract from NOAA as part of new “traffic coordination system for Space”
Leolabs got the deal because it already tracks more 20,000 objects in orbit. Why NOAA however is issuing this contract is baffling. It is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, whose responsibility is supposed to be monitoring the weather and oceans. Why is it getting involved with traffic coordination?
Note: Jay corrects me. He is off next week on business so no quick updates. His ham radio DX trip is February 16 to March 8, but during that time he will send us updates via Starlink.
The support of my readers through the years has given me the freedom and ability to analyze objectively the ongoing renaissance in space, as well as the cultural changes -- for good or ill -- that are happening across America. Four years ago, just before the 2020 election I wrote that Joe Biden's mental health was suspect. Only in this year has the propaganda mainstream media decided to recognize that basic fact.
Fourteen years ago I wrote that SLS and Orion were a bad ideas, a waste of money, would be years behind schedule, and better replaced by commercial private enterprise. Even today NASA and Congress refuse to recognize this reality.
In 2020 when the world panicked over COVID I wrote that the panic was unnecessary, that the virus was apparently simply a variation of the flu, that masks were not simply pointless but if worn incorrectly were a health threat, that the lockdowns were a disaster and did nothing to stop the spread of COVID. Only in the past year have some of our so-called experts in the health field have begun to recognize these facts.
Your help allows me to do this kind of intelligent analysis. I take no advertising or sponsors, so my reporting isn't influenced by donations by established space or drug companies. Instead, I rely entirely on donations and subscriptions from my readers, which gives me the freedom to write what I think, unencumbered by outside influences.

His ham radio DX trip…
Sounds interesting. Wonder what his call sign is. It would be fun to make a contact with him.
Gary M.,
I will be on the Solomons DXpedition in February using the callsign H40WA.
Thanks Jay. Sounds like a great adventure. Best of luck.

Now the FCC has gone after the FAA saying it and Spaceport are guilty of pirate radio.
Time to defund the FCC
Lost contact with Ingenuity. Hope this isn’t the end.

Robert asked: “Why is it getting involved with traffic coordination?”
Well, isn’t this the government fad of the decade? Here is the list, that I can think of, of government agencies that have tasked themselves with this effort:
Air Force
FCC
FAA
Space Force
and now NOAA.
I cannot wait until companies start getting conflicting orders from this conglomeration of disparate governmental interests. Which to follow? Which to disobey? What will be the fines from the agencies whose commands are ignored in favor of another agency’s order? Which agencies will be too conservative and will order maneuvers that are completely unnecessary, thus reducing the lifespan of many of our vital satellites?
Didn’t the commercial companies ask for an easier regulatory system so that they could do business in space through coordinated agencies without confusion, delay, and conflict? Wasn’t Vice President Pence in favor of that, working hard to make it happen? What happened that made it all go so terribly wrong?
Back in contact with Ingenuity!

Gary: Thank you for this link. I am writing a post on Ingenuity at this very moment, and think I can explain what is going on. This update strengthens my speculations.
