Readers!
The time has come for my annual short Thanksgiving/Christmas fund drive for Behind The Black. I must do this every year in order to make sure I have earned enough money to pay my bills.
For this two-week campaign, I am offering a special deal to encourage donations. Donations of $200 will get a free autographed copy of the new paperback edition of Genesis: The Story of Apollo 8, while donations of $250 will get a free autographed copy of the new hardback edition. If you desire a copy, make sure you provide me your address with your donation.
As I noted in July, the support of my readers through the years has given me the freedom and ability to analyze objectively the ongoing renaissance in space, as well as the cultural changes -- for good or ill -- that are happening across America. Fourteen years ago I wrote that SLS and Orion were a bad ideas, a waste of money, would be years behind schedule, and better replaced by commercial private enterprise. Only now does it appear that Washington might finally recognize this reality.
In 2020 when the world panicked over COVID I wrote that the panic was unnecessary, that the virus was apparently simply a variation of the flu, that masks were not simply pointless but if worn incorrectly were a health threat, that the lockdowns were a disaster and did nothing to stop the spread of COVID. Only in the past year have some of our so-called experts in the health field have begun to recognize these facts.
Your help allows me to do this kind of intelligent analysis. I take no advertising or sponsors, so my reporting isn't influenced by donations by established space or drug companies. Instead, I rely entirely on donations and subscriptions from my readers, which gives me the freedom to write what I think, unencumbered by outside influences.
Please consider supporting my work here at Behind the Black. You can support me either by giving a one-time contribution or a regular subscription. There are four ways of doing so:
1. Zelle: This is the only internet method that charges no fees. All you have to do is use the Zelle link at your internet bank and give my name and email address (zimmerman at nasw dot org). What you donate is what I get.
2. Patreon: Go to my website there and pick one of five monthly subscription amounts, or by making a one-time donation.
3. A Paypal Donation or subscription:
4. Donate by check, payable to Robert Zimmerman and mailed to

1. The type of helmet Henry was wearing was a Sallet – a very popular piece of equipment for the period. It resembled to a great extent a Roman “Imperial” helmet of over 1000 years earlier

2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Loades often works as a consultant and expert commentator on TV. I encourage you to check out his Internet videos and books; Here’s a sample

3. Bradmoor’s tool morphed into the bullet extractor, which was part of every military surgeons kit through the First World War.
4. I surprised that the video didn’t show Henry sedated. Medieval medicine knew of such things as opium

Sir Penrose is truly impressive, quick and clear like a teenager (like very few teenagers), at 89½ years of age. He’s just added experience. I’ve watched a dozen lectures and interviews about what he is awarded for. I even had a quick look at the math of some of it, which is impenetrable to me. So, I have no questions. Does anyone have any question?
Aeons…
Yes, he is a very personable and brilliant man, but he has not yet entered the computer age it seems. But man, give him a man or woman to help him translate his hand drawings made with felt-tip pens into computer-generated illustrations.
@Questioner
He does complain when he lectures at foreign universities, that they no longer have overhead projectors (obviously universities that are not Nobel prize certified anymore). And that they are too cumbersome to bring with the luggage on the aeroplane. I think it’s charming. His hand drawings are artwork that will sell on future auctions. That will never happen with a powerpoint slide show file.
He has fooled computers with Penrose Chess Puzzles. Although I think that good software has evolved to figure it out now. Still without any understanding, which is his point. Understanding is not computation. Very important to realize in these days of machine learning imitating human behavior, causing some to wrongly believe that they are or could become “intelligent”.
That, my friends, is a professional. I have to admit, when I was watching this, I was thinking, ‘If you think it hurts now, wait ’till the wound is rinsed with alcohol. And according to the Wikipedia article, is what happened. Oy Yi Yi.

That was amazing! I couldn’t stop watching it. My favorite part was right at the end when the narrator said, .. and they all gave thanks to God. Amen!!
