Germany turns off its instrument on the Spektr-RG orbiting X-ray telescope

As part of Germany’s decision to break off all scientific cooperation with Russia in response to Russia’s Ukraine invasion, the Max Plank Institute has turned off its instrument on the Spektr-RG orbiting X-ray telescope.

Meanwhile, Roscosmos’ head, Dmitry Rogozin revealed he will demand compensation from Europe for its sanctions, including this shut down on Spektr-RG.

Europe’s sanctions cause real losses to Russia’s space corporation Roscosmos. The corporation will estimate them and demand a compensation from partners in Europe, Roscosmos’s press-service told TASS on Tuesday. “They have caused harm to the Spektr-RG laboratory’s research program by turning off one of the two telescopes. Their sanctions cause real losses to us. The damage will be estimated and a bill presented to the European side,” Roscosmos said.

It now appears that all the European cooperation with Russia in space is likely dead, at least until Russia gets out of the Ukraine.

Genesis cover

On Christmas Eve 1968 three Americans became the first humans to visit another world. What they did to celebrate was unexpected and profound, and will be remembered throughout all human history. Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8, Robert Zimmerman's classic history of humanity's first journey to another world, tells that story, and it is now available as both an ebook and an audiobook, both with a foreword by Valerie Anders and a new introduction by Robert Zimmerman.

The ebook is available everywhere for $5.99 (before discount) at amazon, or direct from my ebook publisher, ebookit. If you buy it from ebookit you don't support the big tech companies and the author gets a bigger cut much sooner.

The audiobook is also available at all these vendors, and is also free with a 30-day trial membership to Audible.

"Not simply about one mission, [Genesis] is also the history of America's quest for the moon... Zimmerman has done a masterful job of tying disparate events together into a solid account of one of America's greatest human triumphs."--San Antonio Express-News

    Help me understand please.

Man, these Germans are not particularly consistent. They are still very fond of Russian gas. Maybe Putin should turn off the gas supply to the Germans, but then they would look pretty stupid. China will certainly be happy about more gas.

    I find this very horrible!
Didn’t the Apollo-Soyuz docking in the early 1970s contribute to the idea that at least we don’t fight the cold war in space? I think that Robert Zimmerman is an expert on that topic!

But now it is all in. Stupidly. In ancient times, the Olympic games were off the chart for war. Soldiers were allowed safe passage to Olympus. Even during the many wars then fought. But now Russia isn’t allowed to play ice hockey. It is ridiculous and very dangerous. The hatred and inability to diplomacy is very dangerous now.

The Western powers play the game like this (and that won’t work):
“- I also like to live dangerously.”

The modern version of the “Olympic Truce” has existed since 1996. It is based of course on a non-binding UN resolution.
But the idea was to promote peace.

It has only been violated three times:

    2008: Russian invasion of Georgia
    2014: Russian annexation of Crimea
    2022: Russian invasion of Ukraine

I am not going to cry about their inability to play hockey or soccer of any thing else. They need to take it up with their unscrupulous leader.

  • sippin_bourbon

Oops correction. They revived the call for Truce in 1993, not 96.

Putin hurts Russian space and the anti-Russian backlash threatens to finish it off. They get it from both sides.

This may sound crazy but Europe is rich in gas… They just don’t wanna drill it because of the ecoterrorists.

I’m having an extremely hard time believing anything I see on the news or NPR when they’ve been lying to us for years now.
I was captivated with nonstop coverage of Russia invading Ukraine until I realized it is all being carried on government propaganda stations!
For instance Russia nearly causing a nuclear catastrophe last night… The truth?

Here’s an interesting rant buy an expatriate living in Russia? (United States is not innocent)

I only heard sound bites, of what Putin said in his speech, just as the invasion was starting. Reading the entire speech gave me a different perspective on the reason for the war.

Putin is not a good person, but I have similar grievances with the deep state and their alternative future they have planned for us. Soon the United States will collapse from within… Russia is at least Will not go down without a fight!

This war it’s going to hurt us as much as Putin. Local gas prices went up $.60 in one week. Russia provides a great deal of the fertilizer for farmers, and is a major source for ammo! Which will now be in short supply. There’s also worries that NATO or some nation will bomb the convoy like they did to Sodom Hussein. A US senator has called for his assassination! (Just as many liberals was hoping would happen to Trump)
Russia is desperate to hold onto what they have and will use all the weapons at their disposal to keep it.

They’ve been very successful turning the attention away from the Covid hoax… Fauci hasn’t been seen in weeks and Russia shutting down the Ukrainian testing labs for gain of function research… We’ll be hearing more about those soon… I hope not in a bad way.

I can boil down Poot-tin’s speech to one sentence.

“Look what they made me do!”

Half truths, cherry – picked history, and a at least one blatant lie.

Max, you talk about state media and NPR, and say you cannot believe them after the last few years, but then give us a link to Newsweek.
I am not sure what your point is. They are simply reporting the line from the Russian state media.

The Canadian guy made mention of the low flying recon aircraft, stating that they are performing a mission usually done by satellites.
A few days ago, Anonymous claimed they hacked Russian sats. No one has been able to confirm it. Russia, as expected, denies it (no one would be fool enough to confirm such degradation of assets, if it actually occurred anyway).
But this info about the flight could lend a little weight the possibility that they do not have full control of some of the satellites. I do not think it is possible they lost control of many, and if they did, I doubt it was for long. Another argument for the flights is that the area they wanted pics of was obscured by weather (heavy cloud cover). Either way, I think he is making too big a deal about it.
