NASA to announce future museum homes of shuttles on April 12
NASA administrator Charles Bolden revealed at House hearings this week that NASA will announce the future museum homes for the retiring shuttles on April 12.
There is something terribly sad and ironic about having this announcement occur on the 50th anniversary of the first manned flight into space by Yuri Gagarin.
On Christmas Eve 1968 three Americans became the first humans to visit another world. What they did to celebrate was unexpected and profound, and will be remembered throughout all human history. Genesis: the Story of Apollo 8, Robert Zimmerman's classic history of humanity's first journey to another world, tells that story, and it is now available as both an ebook and an audiobook, both with a foreword by Valerie Anders and a new introduction by Robert Zimmerman.
The ebook is available everywhere for $5.99 (before discount) at amazon, or direct from my ebook publisher, ebookit. If you buy it from ebookit you don't support the big tech companies and the author gets a bigger cut much sooner.
The audiobook is also available at all these vendors, and is also free with a 30-day trial membership to Audible.
"Not simply about one mission, [Genesis] is also the history of America's quest for the moon... Zimmerman has done a masterful job of tying disparate events together into a solid account of one of America's greatest human triumphs."--San Antonio Express-News

Very sad. Especially with the prospects for any future US maned space efforts looking so dim.
I remember Lori Garver after Obama made his “obama-space” announcements, where she said she still hoped people could get back to the moon, perhaps even to Mars, by 2050. Talk about lowering our national sights.
The shuttles did the bulk of all human maned space efforts, carrying 2/3rds of everyone who was ever carried into space (half of all cargo). So its not just the end of the US maned space program — its the end of the bulk of all humanities efforts in space. So announcing that on the 50th anniversary of the first human in space is chilling, especially after Obama’s statements to the NASA administrator that the US must never send people beyond low Earth orbit again. Its like they want to officially commemorate the end of human efforts in space.
