Serbia to sign Artemis Accords
NASA today announced that Serbia tomorrow will become the 69th nation to sign the Artemis Accords.
With this signing, almost every European nation has now joined this American alliance, as shown in blue on the map to the right. Russia is indicated by red, illustrating also how its former Soviet bloc has almost completed joined this American space alliance. The only remaining exceptions are Belarus, Moldova, and several nations formed out of Yugoslavia. The signing of Serbia tomorrow, which joins Slovenia as two former Yugoslavia regions now part of the accords, suggests those other regions will soon sign on as well.

Serbia seems to be hedging its bets. It also signed on to the PRC’s International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) project two years ago. Interestingly, Turkey – which is also in that general neighborhood – officially indicated an interest in doing the same at about the same time, but hasn’t yet formally signed on. So Serbia is actively hedging its bets by signing onto both ILRS and the Artemis Accords while Turkey is passively hedging its bets by signing onto neither.
Serbia is a longtime Russian ally, but . . . Yeah, this is yet one more instance of them hedging their strategic bets.
Russia has the stink of desperation and approaching death about it these days and even the Serbs can smell it.
